Seasons of My Life is the story of an ordinary person who has lived an extraordinary life. Of lessons learnt and lessons taught, from living with honesty, integrity, kindness, and compassion, to not being afraid of challenge and change, and embracing all cultures, care, kindness, and tolerance to all people. Of having purpose and goals and being able to work towards these values that are so needed in the world we all live in. Like nature, our lives can mirror the changing of the seasons, and author Anne James invites you to share her journey of being brought up in a loving environment and as part of a 'village' of people. And just as we tend our physical gardens, we also tend the 'garden' of our family; planting the seeds of our values and encouraging them to flourish and grow within ourselves and our children. Seasons of My Life is a must-read for anyone reflecting on their own life, or who enjoys sharing stories of others from a generation that lived a simpler life, even though the hardships were real.'Be true to who you are, believe in and have faith in yourself.'- Anne James

In a culture that encourages and applauds the search for perfection in all its exterior manifestations, Surprised by Imperfection is a collection of essays and memoirs that reminds readers of the exquisite beauty in the dappled and imperfect aspects of the vast world, seeks out the sanctity of the ordinary in all its seasons, and invites us back to childhood's grand sense of wonder. In each story, Shari Brand Ray considers the sacredness of the small moments in life. With humor and inordinate love for the everyday, Ray connects readers to the glories of the natural world through a return to close observation. In the spring she finds meaning in watching two dogs run in the warm sunshine along the banks of the spring-swollen Mississippi River, and in autumn she experiences the terrifying beauty of leaving her seven-year-old daughter in a Belgian girls' school where neither she nor her daughter yet speak the language. In winter Ray writes of personal wounding, the moments following a life-threatening head-on collision on a snowy night in Memphis as she waits for the ambulance and contemplates her own unknown future. The lyrical essays in Surprised by Imperfection unfold in humor, wisdom, and love, and reawaken the unexpected glory that comprises our collective imperfection.

Suddenly there is a blow to my face, I am hurled to one side. 'My child, I have to go with her!' I scream. But Dr Mengel is standing before me, whip raised. 'Maul halten, shut up!' His eyes gleam. Filled with fear I cower down.In 1943, as the Nazi power swept across central Europe, Rosa, her husband Emanuel and their daughter, Judy, were forced into hiding. But after a year and a half of living a terrifying, day-by-day existence, they were betrayed. As they arrived in Auschwitz, Rosa was torn from her husband and her only daughter. Could she dare to hope she would see either of them again?Somehow, Rosa fought the horror and humiliation of the camp, on occasion coming dangerously close to death. In nursing the people trapped beside her, she helped others survive, but tragically she also watched them die - including a mother she had met before, with a similar story and a daughter the very same age. Her name was Edith Frank.Written immediately in the months after the war, Auschwitz - A Mother's Story tells Rosa de Winter-Levy's unique and heart-breaking personal story - from the atrocities of the camp to her journey out of hell. Powerful and affecting, it is the testimony of a mother, and the pain she will endure for the chance to hold her child again. It's night. The door opens and along with 500 other women I am taken to the so-called Krätzeblock, the scabies block. Mice and rats run over us, the women scream and cry, it's almost unbearable. There's no chance of sleep, we're all consumed by the same thought: tomorrow our final hour will have come.

An inspiring vision of how we can build a more just world-one small change at a time"e;A book as urgent as the moment that produced it."e;-Jelani Cobb, Columbia Journalism SchoolLong before the pandemic, Ruha Benjamin was doing groundbreaking research on race, technology, and justice, focusing on big, structural changes. But the twin plagues of COVID-19 and anti-Black police violence inspired her to rethink the importance of small, individual actions. Part memoir, part manifesto, Viral Justice is a sweeping and deeply personal exploration of how we can transform society through the choices we make every day.Vividly recounting her personal experiences and those of her family, Benjamin shows how seemingly minor decisions and habits could spread virally and have exponentially positive effects. She recounts her father's premature death, illuminating the devastating impact of the chronic stress of racism, but she also introduces us to community organizers who are fostering mutual aid and collective healing. Through her brother's experience with the criminal justice system, we see the trauma caused by policing practices and mass imprisonment, but we also witness family members finding strength as they come together to demand justice for their loved ones. And while her own challenges as a young mother reveal the vast inequities of our healthcare system, Benjamin also describes how the support of doulas and midwives can keep Black mothers and babies alive and well.Born of a stubborn hopefulness, Viral Justice offers a passionate, inspiring, and practical vision of how small changes can add up to large ones, transforming our relationships and communities and helping us build a more just and joyful world.

  • av J. R. Bates

Welcome folks to volume two of 'The North-East Diaries - Batesy's Tale' and I hope you enjoy this ongoing story as much as the first volume. Volume one of 'The North-East Diaries - A Funny Thing Happened in Blyth' covered the early years of the nineteen-sixties. Set predominantly in the mining town of Blyth in Northumberland and following the trials and tribulations of a young lad suddenly thrust into a perplexing Northumbrian environment in the exciting formative years of the sixties. This volume (volume 2) follows the lives of the principal characters as they attempt the precarious straddle between teenage years and adulthood in the late nineteen-sixties and then follows them into the seventies and eighties. Some are successful and some find their attempt at adulthood hugely difficult. You will find many of the characters from volume one re-appear. Sid (Hawky) Brown, Titch Irving, Batesy, Roly, Raisbeck and the surprise re-appearance of Charlie Chuck in Hull of all places. New characters make an entrance too... in particular a funny old codger named Tug from New Deleval and his marras from the lonnen Taps Bob and Mordy. They are all real people and the book is as true as it can possibly be made. This is their story and the complete tale is neither autobiography, memoir nor a work of fiction but a fusion of all three. It draws a picture of the contrast between those years and life as we know it now. A time before mobile phones and the internet. A time when holidays were taken down the beach or at Butlins and not in Ibiza or Corfu. A time when a night out was at the local Working Men's Club or perhaps bingo at the Roxy. A time when Bates pit ruled and coal was king and working men were proud. But most of all a time when music was exciting, innovative and edgy... and bands sang about the ending of wars and the stupidity of life and made us all want to change the world for the better. We didn't of course but it is still a time that I wish the kids of today could experience. If they could then we'd all be 'Working Class Heroes'. Dialogue is written as best as can be remembered and in the vernacular of the day. I hope that if any of my surviving former teachers read this they will forgive the liberties taken with grammar and syntax and refrain from sending back the book covered in red ink and sarcastic comments. Once again names and events have only been changed to protect the innocent.

  • av Brian Morris
    172,-

This fast moving and sometimes disturbing book starts at the point where Brian is about to be arrested for smuggling a kilogram of cocaine into the country in 1995 worth a police estimate of one and a half million pounds, earning him a prison sentence of 12 years. The book continues by telling how he arrived at that point - his disadvantaged life, growing up in Wales in impoverished circumstances with a number of brothers and sisters, all with the same mother but several different fathers. He tells of his first experience with drugs at the tender age of 16, and how by the time he was 19 he had met a Dutch girl and moved to Holland. The book continues to chart his descent into drugs and drug dealing, and how after his break-up with the Dutch girl, he decides to go to Sri Lanka to start a new life, only to get involved in drug smuggling between Sri Lanka and India, whilst living with a poor fisherman and his family who showed him great kindness. He describes life as a dealer and the many smuggling trips to and from different countries, before he was finally arrested in Swansea, the point at which the book starts. The rest of the book deals with his Christian conversion, and the difficulties experienced by him and other prisoners who tried to live out their Christian lives in a harsh and hostile prison environment, and how, in spite of the pressures temptations and setbacks, including seeing fellow believers take their own lives whilst in prison or very shortly after release, because of good behavior his prison term is vastly reduced, and he is finally released. He starts to train to help others overcome the horror which drug involvement brings into a persons life, showing them how they can receive new life in Jesus. Although the book deals with very real and sometimes harrowing situations it is not without a wry humour. The book will appeal to all those who have ever wondered what life is really like in some of Britain's best known high security jails, those who have loved ones who are still dependent on drugs, those who want to better understand why people are attracted to drugs in the first place, and those who enjoy a good story, well told, with all the emotional highs and lows that one would expect from such a tale.

It was 2020, and I was looking for something to ease the self-enforced quarantine of the COVID-19 lockdown. An attractive brochure from Hutton House Lectures arrived in the mail. I signed up for a ZOOM course called Write a Chapter of Your Life, given by Lisa Pulitzer. Writing for that course stirred so many memories of the 90 years of my life that I decided to extend the chapter into a book. Those memories saw me grow and develop from a depression baby born in 1933, into a naïve bride just out of high school. Suddenly, I was a housewife and mother of four children, born over five short years, and then widowed at age 39. I began as a girl with virtually no knowledge of how the world worked, and eventually became an independent woman with a curiosity about life. I have traveled to many wonderful places on five continents. Then, at age 84, I entered into a new way of life with a second marriage. Our combined family of 60 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are very important to both of us. In this memoir I have set forth some of the memories of my life's journey in hopes that a reader might get a glimpse of me as a growing, evolving woman, and appreciate some of the experiences and observations I have been able to recall.
