This is the true story of an American dreamer, a young man who envisioned at an early age the opportunities that citizenship could offer if applied correctly. His mother and father raised him and his five brothers in a loving, unified home, and with this strong foundation, he believed in the importance of a two-parent upbringing. A phone call from a scheming so-called best friend, and a mother intent on ridding herself of the burden of parenting a rebellious, immature daughter with serious behavioral issues, set off a series of events, that derailed this goal-oriented young man's path. A Teen Marriage Circus is based on the author's unimaginable true experience of being forced into a toxic relationship spanning over forty-seven years. This cautionary tale was written to help others recognize the red flags of manipulative behavior and avoid making the same mistakes.

Reflections on a Father and a Son is a journey that at times is gut wrenching while at other moments pause worthy. As a five year old enduring painful spinal taps in a Polio Ward to an adolescent experimenting with epic classroom disruptions, this collection of deeds maligned by misdeeds appears to have only one possible outcome: reform school.Readers witness how growing up in the 1950s and 60s was negotiated in small towns with even smaller margins of supervision. Travel along route 9 from Stottville to Rouses Point, a micro village tucked away innocently in the northeast corner of the Lake Champlain Valley basin of New York State. The early years in the Hudson Valley involve tales of exploration, cruelty, and friendship. After moving just south of the Canadian border, the adventures take on a downward spiral. Crawl through collapsed tunnels in a 19th century deserted fort, rummage the contents of railroad cars for cigarettes or discover how to survive multiple school suspensions. The odyssey intensifies as consistent threads weave through a contentious relationship between father and son. Their bond is buttressed by an ever increasing repertoire of senseless acts bent on destroying all possibilities of post-high school success. Save for one prescient and observant English teacher, a fruitful future would have been squandered. Participate in the transformation of a non-compliant teenager to a tremulous college applicant; the result of one teacher believing in one outlier.

Growing up across from a ball diamond, in a middle class home with a brother and two parents that loved their boys more than they loved each other, all I ever needed was a ball, a glove, and a cadre of friends. I was a nerd, but I could hit. I made friends, but I could field. Perhaps a Jewish Richie Cunningham (with a sense of humor). Then life happened. Go figure. Still, through marriage, children, divorce, deaths, recovery, and true love, I not only survived --- but I thrived. These tales weave together a lifetime of heartfelt memories that climb to but one conclusion: that true happiness can't be bought; it comes from within. This is my story about the friends, family, and wondrous bounces that gifted my journey.

A gripping memoir of a Swedish soldier's journey through the Napoleonic Wars, offering vivid tales of camaraderie, battles, and historic events.A Swedish Soldier in the Napoleonic Wars is an important and rare memoir by a low-ranking officer. It contains lively anecdotes and stories of soldiers, commanders, and life on campaign from 1808 to 1814 in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and North Germany. Available for the first time in English, it provides a new perspective of little-known actions, small by the standards of continental Europe, but vital to our understanding of Sweden's part in the war.In 1808, at the age of 18 and whilst a student at Linköping High School, Carl Magnus Hultin enlisted as a junior officer in the militia, answering the call-to-arms in the nation's efforts to stem the Russian tide before Finland was lost. He then transferred to the regular army as an ensign in the Jönköping Regiment. He took part in the ill-fated Västerbotten expedition against the Russians on Swedish soil in 1809 and witnessed the 1809 coup d'etat to remove the unpopular King Gustav IV Adolf. Following the 'phoney' war with Britain 1811-1812, he served in Mecklenberg, Holstein and Belgium against France and Denmark in the 1813-1814 campaign under Napoleon's former Maréchal Bernadotte, who had been elected as Sweden's Crown Prince. Finally, he participated in the 1814 Norwegian campaign that saw the Union of Norway and Sweden, which lasted until 1905. He remained in the army after the war, retiring as a captain in 1842.Very late in life, he was persuaded to set down his memoirs, which were published in 1872. Two separate editions of the book were reprinted in Sweden in 1954 and 1955 with minimal editing after the expiry of the copyright 70 years after the author's death. The editor's preface to the 1954 edition noted, 'The present volume is ... unique to the extent that it may constitute the only document of literary value from our history of war', whilst the 1955 editor noted 'the account ... was greatly acclaimed' and that Hultin's friends were 'much entertained by his lively, sometimes rather burlesque tales about military life both on and off campaign.'This translation, by a descendent of Captain Hultin, includes extensive explanatory notes together with maps and illustrations to support the narrative.

Growing Up Grits : A Memoir of a Girl Raised in the South offers an in-depth look at the childhood experiences of a young girl growing up in a large family in the deep South. The author shares her first-hand personal and practical knowledge in hopes that it will not only paint a historical picture of life on the farm during this period of time but also to garner a spirit of thankfulness for the lessons learned and the love shared.Day-to-day activities depicted in the book allow the reader the opportunity to understand farm life from planting to harvesting and livelihood as we knew it in the South at a changing time. Crops were raised to provide income for the family as a means of survival. In addition, some crops were produced for family consumption. Fruits and vegetable, domestic animals, and even hunting wild game and fishing played an integral part in supplying food for the household.Strong family and religious foundations needed to not only survive, but to thrive, during turbulent and changing times are explored. Respect for the sacrifices made by our forefathers and honor for the love and discipline they showed are permeated throughout the book. Many of the family stories chronicled provide an intimate capsule look at relationships, faith, character, discipline, encouragement, and direction. In the midst of all the hard labor and impoverished conditions, a lot of precious memories were made - AND a lot of funny things happened on the way to growing up.

Since I was going to be a preacher, I needed to practice. Only being about eight or nine years old, who was going to listen to me? Not to worry. In the pasture near the barn was an empty hay rack. Perfect! With Bible in hand, I climbed up on the rack. Cows were moving around the barnyard. It was near milking time. The crowds were filling the auditorium. With much shoving and mooing, they prepared to hear the gospel. As I started to preach, everyone in the congregation looked on with fascination. Big, brown eyes stared in amazement. I shouted my text, telling the cows to repent or perish. After a few minutes of loud and lively preaching, I watched several of them slowly walk away. Not one convert! The passionate pursuit had begun.

This is a story of the casual criminality that is required to navigate the bureaucracy and business in general. Sometimes this is necessary for the system to operate, sometimes a mere convenience, sometimes for financial gain or even just a helping hand for another human being. The story covers the sloth, incompetence and pure evil of the Civil Service and their interaction with private business. It tells of what really happens in the inner workings of private businesses and their interaction with their overlords in intimate detail. This is a story seldom, if ever told, because those that know don't write, and those who write don't know. It covers the wonderful world of dodgy finance and operating a large business without capital. It is a story of human endurance and persistence and eventual victory of a sort. The story begins with a description of life in rural Queensland about thirty years after the original white settlement, covers the construction of major infrastructure when rural industries were expanding rapidly and the early years of the iconic mineral industry at Mount Isa. The author knew well at least eight men who spent a considerable stretch in jail and can say that none of them were bad men and at least three were men of higher moral standards and love of their fellow man than the general population. This is in contrast to some of the very senior public servants with whom he crossed swords, who were pure evil and grossly incompetent to boot.

When the author reached the age of eighty, and was no longer able to travel much, he began to put a few words on paper; his motivation was to keep his mind alert as his muscles weakened. Some of these 'musings' attempted to be amusing, without much success. Others were reactions to articles in the Australian newspaper, in the days when he could afford to have it delivered every day. Then he got carried away and began to deliberately wear different hats; a sportswriter one day, a current affairs commentator on another day, an arrogant book-reviewer the next. All the opinions expressed are his own, based upon wide reading and a good memory, so that ideas spawned by a book on theoretical physics began to mix with stories of the Brith Raj in India. And his sound Catholic upbringing, based on his father's love of Rerum Novarum, began to embrace the results of living for a while in a strongly Buddhist society. So, if you are looking for historical accuracy you will not find it here: he has kept no notes or references; what is in his head has leaked out through his word-processer. It is curiously therapeutic; a bit like going to Confession but not quite.

'And then came the session where I felt I would give up. I felt frustrated as I'd worked so hard on trying to speak but the most important words; the worst ones, had simply not come out. I implied I would not necessarily come back the following week and as I got up to leave the room, Pat said, 'Try detaching from it entirely. Try writing it as a fairy story. Start with the words, once upon a time there was a little girl'. That evening, I tried. I sat on my bed and typed on the note's app of my phone Once Upon A Time ... and finally, four decades after the abuse began, the words started to flow.' This book documents the therapeutic journey undertaken by Sophie and her therapist, Pat. It includes all chapters of the fairy tale and the drawings Sophie created to help her make sense of her experiences and to reconnect with herself. It also contains the many in-between session conversations Pat and Sophie had by email, WhatsApp, and texts, with important insights into how to work safely with trauma. Essential reading for all therapists, counsellors, health professionals, educators, and social workers, interested in understanding or working with survivors of child sexual abuse, and for those who are survivors of sexual abuse, The Flying Child - A Cautionary Fairy Tale for Adults- Finding a purposeful life after Child Sexual Abuse through compassionate and creative therapy - is a must- have for your bookshelf. Today, Sophie is a survivor activist, writer, founder and managing director of The Flying Child: a non-profit, National Lottery Community Funded organisation improving the awareness of child sexual abuse and the consequences of trauma.
