  • av Adele Dumont
    164,-

When I¿ve been overtaken, I have stood and watched the water in my porridge simmer away into the air, and then the oats turn black and crackle with dryness, and my ears fill with the smoke alarm¿s shriek. When Adele Dumont is diagnosed with trichotillomania ¿ compulsive hair-pulling ¿ it makes sense of much of her life to date. The seemingly harmless quirk of her late teens, which rapidly developed into almost uncontrollable urges and then into trance-like episodes, is a hallmark of the disease, as is the secrecy with which she guarded her condition from her family, friends, and the world at large. The diagnosis also opens up a rich line of inquiry. Where might the origins of this condition be found? How can we distinguish between a nervous habit and a compulsion? And how do we balance the relief of being `seen¿ by others with our experience of shame?Reminiscent of the writing of Leslie Jamison and Fiona Wright, The Pulling is a fascinating exploration of the inner workings of a mind. In perfectly judged prose, both probing and affecting, Dumont illuminates how easily ritual can slide into obsession, and how close beneath the surface horror and darkness can lie.

A powerful exploration of postpartum psychosis and motherhood -- and a call to end the stigma and blame.Early motherhood is supposed to be joyous, but for Aaisha Alvi those early days were ruined by terrifying thoughts about her baby and family. Her experience was the antithesis of everything she had ever been told about motherhood, far beyond the trials of breastfeeding or putting her baby to sleep.Aaisha did recover and began to enjoy motherhood. She was thrilled when she fell pregnant again. Sadly, that pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, and the psychosis returned. This time, however, she was blindsided by the unimaginable: voices urged her to stab her daughter and to harm innocent people. Aaisha felt evil, worthy of taking her own life. But each time she sought medical help, she was turned away. With unflinching honesty, Aaisha takes readers beyond the vitriol and blame that is flung at women suffering from postpartum psychosis. Hers is a clarion call for increased awareness of a condition that need never result in tragedy.

Heart is my big, beautiful, intelligent, Leadersheep that lives on Coldstream Icelandic Sheep Farm. It took me three years to figure out why she never lambed. I just thought she was just waiting for her Prince Charming. Four different rams came through the farm and left without a lamb for her. I know that she loved lambs because she was present for each one's birth. After the lambs were born, Heart would continually watch over them and protect them. All the lambs love their Auntie Heart and played around her every day. They often showed off in their lamb races. Sometimes Auntie Heart would spring along with them as if her legs were Pogo Sticks. It was hilarious watching a 200-pound ewe bouncing around with the lambs. I had a veterinarian examine her a few years ago to try and figure out why she never lambed. She told me that Heart could never lamb because her gender was not defined. After that revelation I took her name off the ewe breeding list and gave her the position she had deserved all along. Heart the Leadersheep Protector of all things small.

Sexual abuse. Heroin addiction. A childhood lost and a life nearly ended. He Calls Me Redeemed is a raw and gripping memoir of pain, addiction, and the redeeming power of faith. In He Calls Me Redeemed, Arman explores his past at the intersection of faith, addiction, abuse, family, culture, and death. He walks the reader through his life, typical in some ways but painted with a unique touch of Armenian culture and the harsh realities of sexual abuse in his drug-rich Jersey Shore community. As a boy, he tries to manage the pain of being sexually abused while stumbling toward manhood. Young Arman looks up to his loving father. His father, however, holds a tragic secret inside. His father's struggles foreshadow his own path, culminating in gripping drug addiction and crime. The depths of Arman's addiction and anguish make rock bottom hard to reach. Hopeless and on the verge of suicide, Arman begs to be saved from his pain. It's at that exact moment the love of God transforms him. What follows is an exploration of self on the other side of pain, which presents its own challenges. Despite his spiritual salvation and redemption, Arman reinforces the imagery of physical scars as he describes more heartbreak. Luckily for the reader, the final message is one of hope as the boy and son become a man and father, flawed and scarred but Redeemed. A hotel on the beach served as a literal home for young Arman. In He Calls Me Redeemed, he takes us through his past via "rooms," each containing salient memories and insights. The rooms are intimate, each having a look into his soul as he encounters family history, culture, religion, sex, drugs, death, and fatherhood. Arman's appeal as an author is his ability to lay his naked truth on the pages without condition. He remains accountable throughout, allowing us to read his vividly detailed experiences as they were. He is not seeking redemption from the reader; we can simply take in his powerful story.Walk through the rooms of Arman Kaymakcian's life in this vividly detailed, emotionally charged memoir. Witness the intersection of faith, family, and addiction as Arman stumbles toward manhood in the wake of childhood sexual trauma. He Calls Me Redeemed lays bare the naked truth-no holds barred. An unflinching portrayal of the darkest depths of human experience and the triumph of the human spirit. Scroll up and grab your copy today.

"Recognizing God's Fingerprints: Miracles of Rescue, Reset and Rejoicing" is a collection of miraculous moments in the author's life, when it was obvious that God intervened to rescue, reset, or simply pour out blessings on her life.It is often only in hindsight that we see God's fingerprints on our life story. The book not only shares some of the wonderful things that God has done in her life, but also invites the reader to recognize their own miracle stories. It is an inspiring read that will deepen your faith, increase your hope, and release a spirit-lifting joy that will come by realizing that amidst the seemingly random circumstances you find yourself in, that God indeed has a plan for your life, and for the world as well.In the author's words: "This book is like a spiritual charm bracelet for me; each testimony commemorating a special moment where I knew beyond all doubt that God intervened in my life when I most needed Him to. Perhaps a miracle, or a miraculous moment, is one of the most natural of all of life's moments."

After the initial euphoria, one of the potholes along the road as we transition from work to retirement may be the need to discover a new purpose to fill the sudden void. Helpful ideas may be buried in a closet, an attic, or wherever else you store your personal artifacts.A Father's Letters: Connecting Past to Present shows how re-evaluating a father's writings to his family eventually illuminated his son's life trajectory. The letters chronicle two distinct periods: his days as a combat infantryman in World War Il Europe and-30 years later-as an accountant tethered to a desk job at a small Midwestern canning company in his hometown. Whether in France or rural Illinois, Glenn Browne Jr. always shared his experiences with candor, wit, and wisdom.A Father's Letters serves as a reminder of the unique qualities of personal correspondence, and how it can offer new insights into our own lives-past, present, and future.

This is not just the story of one woman, mother, wife, business owner's journey through the most life-altering year in recent history. It is a collection of stories from over twenty people worldwide sharing how their lives were affected by the Coronavirus. From an ER doctor living in Brooklyn, New York, to the General Manager of the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs in Australia, everybody had a life-changing experience. It is a story of sorrow, of love, of compassion, of fear, and of hope. We know what happened on the outside world, but what happened behind closed doors? Inside these pages you will learn the power of the human spirit and the will behind these men, women, and children who made it through the year. You will witness how a war for the human race was fought, and how the world was changed forever.

The depth of our memories are the "life stones" within the stairway of a life lived. Never underestimate the gift that your life story will bring. It's the gateway to a peaceful journey. In her second book, A Walk In Rose's Garden: Our Stepping Stones in Life, author Karen Swasey has shared with us a treasure trove of stories, journeys taken on the stepping stones of the lives of many people she has known and helped over her years in the assisted living field. She entreats us to embrace the memories from our heritage and share the stories of old. "Keep the pathway of your life story alive for generations to come.. so that your loved ones may understand the path taken and lessons learned. Envision your place of tranquility and peace that you may visit this place of refuge. Lift the vail of miracles and faith so that one may find the gift of being present."Many of us say that we don't have time to write our stories. However it's important that we create an interest in sharing our memoirs and to make sure that not all is dependent on a wireless frequency... but it is a written tome, held in hand to be cherished.
