NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Central Park birder Christian Cooper takes us beyond the viral video that shocked a nation and into a world of avian adventures, global excursions, and the unexpected lessons you can learn from a life spent looking up.“Wondrous . . . captivating.”—Ed Yong, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of An Immense WorldA Washington Post and Chicago Public Library Best Book of the Year • Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal Christian Cooper is a self-described “Blerd” (Black nerd), an avid comics fan and expert birder who devotes every spring to gazing upon the migratory birds that stop to rest in Central Park, just a subway ride away from where he lives in New York City. While in the park one morning in May 2020, Cooper was engaged in the birdwatching ritual that had been a part of his life since he was ten years old when what might have been a routine encounter with a dog walker exploded age-old racial tensions. Cooper’s viral video of the incident would send shock waves through the nation. In Better Living Through Birding, Cooper tells the story of his extraordinary life leading up to the now-infamous incident in Central Park and shows how a life spent looking up at the birds prepared him, in the most uncanny of ways, to be a gay, Black man in America today. From sharpened senses that work just as well at a protest as in a park to what a bird like the Common Grackle can teach us about self-acceptance, Better Living Through Birding exults in the pleasures of a life lived in pursuit of the natural world and invites you to discover them yourself.Equal parts memoir, travelogue, and primer on the art of birding, this is Cooper’s story of learning to claim and defend space for himself and others like him, from his days at Marvel Comics introducing the first gay storylines to vivid and life-changing birding expeditions through Africa, Australia, the Americas, and the Himalayas. Better Living Through Birding recounts Cooper’s journey through the wonderful world of birds and what they can teach us about life, if only we would look and listen.
"Examining the cultural belief that our animal instincts are to be corrected or corralled, nature advocate and rewilding facilitator Vanessa Chakour explores our inner and outer landscapes through the lens of wild animals. How can wolves, misunderstood in myths but vital to ecosystems, teach us to rewrite dangerous stories and respect nature's wisdom? How do the peaceful coexistence strategies of black bears offer insights into sharing resources? How can the engineering feats of beavers guide us in fostering regenerative building solutions and vibrant ecosystems? What can the loyal partnership of seahorses teach us about nurturing and love? In Earthly Bodies, Vanessa draws parallels from struggles she has weathered in her own life to those endured by twenty-three wild animals-from wolves to sea lions-exploring our unease of feeling like prey; challenging the entrapment of our limiting beliefs; contextualizing the turmoil of fractured landscapes; and affirming our primal ache to belong. Vanessa's pivotal encounters with creatures in sync with their primal rhythms and demands illustrate the necessity of relying on the intelligence of gut instinct; of the magnetic pull of attraction; of the body's mandate for restorative rest; and of the sacred bonds of love. We often cut ourselves off from identifying with wild animals-like wolves, foxes, bats and bears, and other animal relatives-out of fear, ignorance, disgust, or misunderstanding, yet our earthly human bodies can lead us in our pursuits of pleasure, love, wonder, healing, and connection. With each section containing an aspect of injured animal's return home to their natural habitat, and-in our case-to an embodied, instinctual self, Earthly Bodies meditates on how this journey from enclosures, to rehabilitation, to soft release, and finally to homing raises questions about our humanity. In so learning, we understand how we might benefit from embracing our own animal nature to gain deeper self-actualization, find common ground with our fellow animals, and learn to thrive together"--

Amongst The Grapevines is a mixed form memoir of poetry, prose and digital illustrations. This multifaceted collection explores a deep and personal connection to the Syrian conflict, those afflicted by it and the sense of misplaced identity it has caused. "I wish I never had you." "You talk in riddles." "Can't you talk intelligent?" My mother said these words to me more than times than I can count. I thought it was normal.I learned it was not. This is my story. I didn't speak until I was five. At age six, I was put in special education and called a 'retard' by my own brothers. I was autistic, but no one knew it. Except God knew. At six years old, He told me He was watching over me. I didn't even know who God was, except by the spitting remarks my mother made about religion at the dinner table. At seven I was abused by my friend's 19-year-old cousin. At ten my mother punched me in the face with her closed fist, blaming me for something I didn't do. Realizing she would never love me, I no longer wanted to live. I handed my brother a knife and demanded that he use it on me. He stared at me and laughed. It was at that moment I realized I had no choice but to survive and no one was going to help me. I had to choose my own path. I had to learn to love myself. I had to turn the negatives in my life into positives. Autistic, dyslexic, and carrying a big secret, I made my way in the world with a single dream.
Mama's Fireside Chronicles is a composed from author Pawnee Pleines's personal experience. The poems in this book reflect some of the communication between herself and Jesus. Throughout this book, she shares how her relationship with Jesus has grown deeper since she was a little girl.It has been written that every memoir reminds us of the faraway and long ago, of loss and change, of persons and places beyond recall. Pawnee finds that little memory of her life is as clear as she would like it to be but realizes the point of every lesson in her life returns to her memory when it is needed most. Like an old chest where we keep our precious photo albums, when we feel the need, the photos are there.Pawnee gives all the credit to Jesus, her unofficial co-author of this book.

When fantasizing about what we want to be when we grow up, it's rare to choose to become a driver in any other capacity than racing, but I chose this as a way to make some quick cash.I never imagined I would love driving people from place to place. In six and a half years, I gave over 10,000 rides, met more than 30,000 people, and moved from the glamour and glitz of San Francisco, California, to the snow-capped mountains in the high desert of New Mexico.I saw things most people only dream about, met interesting people from the rich and famous to the criminal element, and turned my back on those who wanted to use my car for more than a ride. Two greatest fears became reality. I had to decide whether to drive my car off a mountain or succumb to the intimidations of a passenger bent on mayhem. I learned early on that if I was going to survive as a driver, I had to develop "Rules." But rules are no good when you have to ask your passengers, "Are You Going to Kill Me?"I've had my life threatened by a psychopathic murderer, a machete-wielding nut case, and a series of dangerous, wild animals. In the end, I wouldn't change a second of the ride.(About the Author)An Oregon native, Erin Allen started driving for a taxi replacement company in San Francisco, California, and ended up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she now lives with her dog Dakota. "I was a Realtor, but lost my desire to sell real estate after being scammed. I didn't know what I wanted to do, so I just kept driving."

The stories in this collection are dedicated to my grandchildren, the eager listeners who encouraged me, again and again, to "tell me a story." I hope that hidden in the stories are numerous family values: kindness, appreciation and care for one another, enjoyment of life, curiosity, education, adventure, humor... These stories are part of my memoirs - preserving family events and giving something of myself, and my love, to my children and grandchildren...and you.
