A lighterman, Frederick Horsfall, who worked the docks from his barge, unloading ships of every sort of cargo coming into London for the great exhibition of 1851. A tough trade, living in tough conditions in one of the most poverty-stricken parts of East London. It follows his children and grandchildren, who became Royal Marines, sailors and soldiers in the great war. It tells of their lives, loves and deaths through some of the most dramatic times in history. The story then follows a ratcatcher, William Jennings from Great Bentley in Essex, his trade, his life and marriage and his son Ernest. Ernest who became a Metropolitan policeman, working his beat around the East London docks, supplementing his living by bullying and extorting from the opium dens, brothels and illegal drinking dens of Chinatown in Limehouse. The third family, the Spiers family, started life in the village of Earl Shilton in Leicestershire, where they were forced to leave their home village to find work. They moved to Birmingham where life did not pan out as they hoped, so they continued their journey to London. Crossing paths while there with the Jennings and the Horsfall families. Two of these families emigrated to the far-flung parts of the world. One family to Brisbane in Queensland Australia, the other to St. Louis in America. The original letters and documents their descendants kept form the basis for the facts of this book, the dialogue and characteristics of the participants are purely fictional. The family dramas are interwoven with the historic global events occurring at the time.
In Full Circle: Memoir of A Vietnamese-Canadian Librarian, Vinh-The Lam tells the story of his journey from American-trained librarian in South Vietnam to Librarian Emeritus in Canada. After becoming the first US-educated President of the Vietnamese Library Association (VLA) in 1974, Lam worked alongside a team of fellow American-trained librarians to modernize and expand the South Vietnamese library system. He even founded the country's first library science department at V¿n H¿nh University. But after the fall of South Vietnam in 1975, the VLA and all of Lam's achievements were lost. He spent the next six years in poverty, before emigrating to Canada in 1981 and rebuilding his life and career. With a new start in North America, Lam made valuable contributions to the library community, eventually retiring as Librarian Emeritus from the University of Saskatchewan in 2006. When Vietnam appealed to overseas intellectuals to return and help the country move forward in the aftermath of the collapse of the Communist system, Lam and his former VLA team answered the call, ready to help Vietnam thrive in a new era of innovation and progress. This is the personal memoir of Lam's full journey, from Vietnam to Canada and back again.

"A deeply personal and illuminating approach to antiracism and allyship, revealing the power of imagination and action to dismantle oppressive systems and build liberating ones, from a highly lauded lecturer, public academic, writer, and activist. In A Renaissance of Our Own, Rachel Cargle details the seminal event that put her on the map--her viral 2017 Women's March appearance that thrust her into the national conversation on feminism and allyship--and how she soon woke up to the fallacies of a movement she had believed in. Discovering and unpacking the white-washed lies she'd been fed about intersectional 'solidarity,' Cargle's awakening, although painful and seismic, gifted her the opportunity to see the world through a new lens. Now, Cargle shares her journey, depicting a framework for allyship, and beyond, that she developed along the way. In creating KEA (Knowledge, Empathy, Action), or as she calls them 'from the head to the heart to the feet,' Cargle learned to craft a world independent of oppressive constructs that allowed her to critically examine her surroundings. Alongside KEA, she established a set of intentional values based on an individual sense of purpose, known as higher values, and through the combination of these tools, reimagined her approach to the personal, societal, and structural components of life that are often stifled. She provides the same tools and prompts that she used to unearth and align her own values so anyone can wield them, and ultimately, identify the structures and mindsets that hold them back and learn to move forward. A Renaissance of Our Own serves as a reminder of the power of reimagining as an engine for critical learning, radical empathizing, and intentional action"

"The story of one woman's remarkable work with a trio of charismatic, endangered bird species-and her discoveries about the devastating threats that imperil them. In Feather Trails, wildlife biologist and birder Sophie A. H. Osborn reveals how the harmful environmental choices we've made-including pesticide use, the introduction of invasive species, lead poisoning, and habitat destruction-have decimated Peregrine Falcons, Hawaiian Crows, and California Condors. In the Rocky Mountains, the cloud forests of Hawai'i, and the Grand Canyon, Sophie and her colleagues work day-to-day to try to reintroduce these birds to the wild, even when it seems that the odds are steeply stacked against their survival. With humor and suspense, Feather Trails introduces us to the fascinating behaviors and unique personalities of Sophie's avian charges and shows that what endangers them ultimately threatens all life on our planet. More than a deeply researched environmental investigation, Feather Trails is also a personal journey and human story, in which Sophie overcomes her own obstacles-among them heat exhaustion, poachers, rattlesnakes, and chauvinism. Ultimately, Feather Trails is an inspiring, poignant narrative about endangered birds and how our choices can help to ensure a future not only for the rarest species, but for us too"--

This memoir is about the internal conflict I've dealt with since growing up in the Mid-Atlantic States with a mother who loved the arts and a father who became entranced with the rugged beauty of the wild West. While I'm in one place for any length of time I miss the other-the climate, the people, the place. Navigating the distance between Montana and the East Coast has certainly given me an appreciation for the culture in both places, but it has also left me feeling not completely "at home" in either.
