GOING HOME is my story of growing up in Wayland, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, in the 1960s and 1970s. The mirage of an idyllic and upright community is shattered by the reality of dark societal forces fueled by greed, alcohol, and lust. Adultery, Molotov cocktails, and midnight drug raids collide with a world of tutus, horses, and elite ballet training in Yugoslavia. The perfection of my family's "Leave it to Beaver" façade smashes against the angst of multiple car crashes, electro-shock treatments, and death. The tumultuous and divisive times of the Vietnam War, the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., and the civil rights movement are the omnipresent forces that fanned the cultural stresses of decadence and deceit prevalent in my experience growing up. The memoir is both a story of my life and a clear historical record of life in Wayland during this period. Reflecting over the past 66 years, much in the town has changed dramatically. But the essence of the town's natural beauty with its pervious connection to the perpetual cycles of seasonal magic has become a powerful touchstone of where I am from and where I am going. I am blessed to have grown up and to be growing old in Wayland, Massachusetts.

  • - A Memoir
    av Lisa Brener
    177,-

Beauty Laid Bare is Lisa Brener's lyrical coming-of-age memoir set in vibrant and moody New Orleans in the 1950's, '60s and '70s. Her parents' unhappy marriage and its impact on the family creates an emotional void for Lisa. At 11, she bravely reaches out to the larger world and discovers a place in the local theatre. We follow her trajectory from early success on the stage to a competitive Performance Arts Boarding school, far from home. There Lisa has an emotional breakdown, resulting in a traumatic stay in a mental hospital for much of her teen years. Despite the abuse she suffers at the hospital, Lisa finds the inner strength to transcend circumstances and pursue her deep desire to live, for creative expression and connection. Her inspiring journey chronicles how Lisa overcame obstacles and challenges, succeeding in college and then law school. Lisa not only survives, but also finds love and creates a family while becoming a pioneer in women's rights, and possibly the most influential employment attorney in Louisiana. Beauty Laid Bare is ultimately a profound meditation on forgiveness and gratitude, and our ability to see beauty everywhere in our lives.

"An intimate look at the making of a man, an actor, an advocate?and most importantly?a happy human being. A wonderful book that is funny, honest, fearless, and generous in its vulnerability." ?Douglas Stuart, Booker Prize-winning author of Shuggie BainThere is absolutely no logical reason why I am here. The life trajectory my nationality and class and circumstances portended for me was not even remotely close to the one I now navigate. But logic is a science and living is an art.The release I felt in writing my first memoir, Not My Father's Son, was matched only by how my speaking out empowered so many to engage with their own trauma. I was reminded of the power of my words and the absolute duty of authenticity.But...No one ever fully recovers from their past. There is no cure for it. You just learn to manage and prioritize it. I believe the second you feel you have triumphed or overcome something ? an abuse, an injury to the body or the mind, an addiction, a character flaw, a habit, a person ? you have merely decided to stop being vigilant and embraced denial as your modus operandi. And that is what this book is about, and for: to remind you not to buy in to the Hollywood ending.Ironically maybe, much of Baggage chronicles my life in Hollywood and how, since I recovered from a nervous breakdown at 28, work has repeatedly whisked me away from personal calamities to sets and stages around the world. It is also about marriage(s): starting with the break-up of my first (to a woman) and ending with the ascension to my second (to a man) with many kissed toads in between! But in everything, each failed relationship or encounter with a legend (Liza! X Men! Gore Vidal! Kubrick! Spice Girls!), in every bad decision or moment of sensual joy I have endeavored to show what I have learned and how I've become who I am today: a happy, flawed, vulnerable, fearless middle-aged man, with a lot of baggage.

A legendary New York Times war correspondent delivers his unforgettable final dispatch: a deeply moving meditation on life inspired by his sudden battle with terminal brain cancer. For thirty years, Rod Nordland shadowed death. As one of his generation's preeminent war correspondents, he reported in over 150 countries, many of which were in violent upheaval, and was no stranger to witnessing tragedy. But in summer 2019, during the height of India's erratic monsoon season, Nordland was suddenly faced with a tragedy of his own: he collapsed in the middle of a morning jog, was rushed to the hospital, and diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor. After decades chasing conflicts across the globe, Nordland, now confined to a hospital bed, found the strength to face more personal conflicts. He reconnected with his estranged children and became closer with them than he ever thought possible. He repaired a friendship with a best friend that had been broken for twenty years. The arrogance and certitude that dominated his every action was replaced by a lucid sense of humility and generosity that persisted even after he left the hospital. Norland's tragedy became, in his own words, "a gift that has enriched my life." Waiting for the Monsoon is the exemplary story of confronting death with both eyes open, and of the human capacity to persevere even in the most difficult of times. With tremendous clarity, grace, and courage, Nordland has delivered a powerful final assignment, revealing how facing the unknown can transform experience and change our relationship to the world around us.

  • - A Family Story of Immigration, Love, Loss and Hope
    av Deborah Meshell Durst
    214,-

This book is a memoir of my life growing up in a new immigrant family. My parents left Guyana, South America in 1962 with all of the hopes and dreams that most new immigrants have. Hoping to transfer his career as a Senior Customs Officer from Guyana to Canada, my Father ran into a major and unexpected obstacle in the fulfillment of this dream. Our family struggled to survive in our new country. After sixteen years of trying to make ends meet, we were finally recovering from the shock of immigration only to meet grief, loss and tragedy as a result of suicide. As I reflected on my childhood in these memoirs, I could see the working of God in my life even as I began my own family. God was with me in the valley of loss and grief. He gave me hope. He was faithful. He turned my mourning into joy. This is a story of His faithfulness in a little girl's life.

Shenanigans is a memoir about a series of events that took place in the late 50's involving the author and others who attended Palo Alto High School in California. The word "shenanigans" here refers to projects that may have been conceived with enthusiasm but could end unsuccessfully. Sometimes we can learn from such experiences. Other times, not so much! They can be pretty funny, though (especially much later!)

  • - One man's battle with normal
    av Tom Miller
    168,-

The narrator is funny, intelligent, perceptive, and (mostly) kind - but he doesn't understand the social rules most of us learn effortlessly. In a brilliant collection of episodes ranging from wildly funny to blackly despairing, he gives us an unflinching view from the perspective of the socially marginalized. With humor and compassion as well as anger and frustration, he shows us the profound loneliness of the disconnected, and reminds us that moments of real connection are gifts to be treasured.
