'I thought if I was going to die I should write some things down' Kirsty Everett was going to be an Olympic gymnast. But as she made plans to win gold, life, as it does, laughed at the goal she'd set. Aged nine, she was diagnosed with leukaemia and spent the next two and a half years in treatment and attending the funerals of children she met in the cancer ward. At the age of sixteen, Kirsty's cancer returned. Faced with a devastating prognosis, she threw herself into as much as she could - friends, school, drama, sport, even a life-writing course with Patti Miller. As she said, 'I thought if I was going to die I should write some things down.'Against the odds, Kirsty survived. She never achieved gold at the Olympics, but she learned a lot about people, attitudes and resilience. This is a book about growing up different when you want to be the same; sparking hostility where there should be support; and how love can be tested to its utmost. It's wise and unflinching and hopeful, and you won't feel the same after reading it.PRAISE'Told by a writer who's a real natural' Steven Carroll, Sydney Morning Herald'[An] incredible book ... I haven't been able to stop thinking about Kirsty's journey' Chyka Keebaugh'Everett is a born writer, her compelling story shot through with the extraordinary sensitivities of childhood' - B+P magazine'Honey Blood is one of the most exuberant, life-affirming memoirs I have ever read. The fact that it is about the uncompromising reality of childhood cancer, makes it all the more extraordinary. Read it and be utterly bowled over Kirsty Everett's astonishing courage, honesty and cheeky humour' - Patti Miller, author'If the Olympic Games are designed around people achieving their personal best, commitment, courage, determination and reaching their goals, Kirsty has been to the equivalent of two Olympics' - Wayne Staunton, managing director, Sold Out events management'Do not be afraid of this book. The big C in it is not cancer, it's Courage. The courage to deal with pain, loss, fear and the shattering of a young girl's big dreams.'Instead of tiptoeing around the tough stuff, and leaving the most difficult bits out, Kirsty Everett dives right in, taking the reader into her world, bravely, honestly, with raw humour and grit. We get up close to her tight-knit family, boisterous friends, tender first loves, doctors both brusque and kind, and rude strangers. Death hovers on every page, but life's vitality and Kirsty's defiant spirit shove it aside.'This refreshingly straight-talking account of adolescent leukaemia goes beyond pain to a fuller, wiser, deeper understanding of what really matters when everything you hope for hangs by a thread. It offers the best medicine for anyone who has ever faced relentless physical and mental odds and obstacles that create seemingly insurmountable roadblocks as tests of character. It may not be a cure, but it is one mighty transfusion of the powerful drugs that make us human and help us survive: hope, compassion, and love' - Caroline Baum, author'This is a coming of age story that will shock and inspire you. Told with searing honesty Honey Blood tells the close-up story of growing up while everything is falling down. In her compassionate, funny and warm way Kirsty Everett tells her story that will inspire others to tell and live through their stories. A wonderful and truthful insight into how to survive and thrive against the odds' - Michael Anderson, Professor of Creativity and Arts Education, University of Sydney

While German bombs were falling on London people didn't worry too much when hearing Hitler's doodlebugs, the dreaded V1 flying bomb. But when the noise stopped then they were worried because they knew that the rocket was about to drop - on them!David, hanging in a basket inside an air raid shelter, was oblivious to all of this for he was just a baby.Growing up in West London he spoke with a cockney accent even though he wasn't a true cockney. He went to a good school and later to an art college but not being impressed with the lifestyle of an artist or of an interior designer he left and got an ordinary job, His sporting interests included rowing with a club on the nearby River Thames and gaining instruction in the sport of judo but at the age of 18 he was looking for something more, an adventure. He joined up for a three-year stint in a colonial police force in Southern Rhodesia and never looked back. He lost his cockney accent, learned a lot about police work and the native Rhodesians, both black and white, and his three-year stint turned into over ten. Then using his police experience he started two successful private security companies, one in Rhodesia, the other in South Africa, and later emigrated to British Columbia in Canada where he started a third. In 1984 he began working for the Canadian government, firstly in a security capacity and later in their commercial sector before taking early retirement on December 31st, 1999, and moving to the United States at the beginning of the new millennium. Now in his fifth country of residence, he resurrected his artistic talents and began selling his art at various shows in the south-eastern United States. He also joined a local rowing club and within a few months was their manager and coach. He has enjoyed many years of travel to over forty countries, has lived in five on three different continents and continues to live a healthy lifestyle which includes kayaking, cycling and plenty of walking.

"This beautifully written memoir is for anyone who has walked a hard road and wondered how to get to the other side. Stephanie Duncan Smith promises that it's not through grit and force that you will find a way forward, but through leaning in to the promises that hold true when all seems lost. Duncan Smith's personal disorientation began when she lost her first pregnancy on the winter solstice's longest night, just as the world readied to celebrate its most historic birth on Christmas. Then a new yet uncertain pregnancy unfolded in parallel to the global pandemic, until one year nearly to the day of her loss, she gave birth to her daughter whose birthday marked the peak of pandemic death in their city. This clash prompted a desperate search for steadiness, in which the liturgical year became an anchoring force. In Even After Everything, Duncan Smith looks to the church's calendar as a way of finding and reorienting ourselves within the sacred story of Advent, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, and Ordinary Time. The Christian year illuminates a full circle of love, loss, and liminality, holding space for the full spectrum of the human experience. At its heart lives the promise of God-With-Us, inviting us into the spiritual practice of living well by accepting that there is a time for everything, and trusting that in whatever moment we find ourselves, we are never truly alone"--

"Nicole Maines knows a little something about a "happily-ever-after." Not just because she's a self-professed expert in the Disney princess canon (Ariel's flowing orange hair? ICONIC). But also, she's lived it. After coming out at the age of three, her family had not only come to terms with her transgender identity and accepted her, but they won a landmark court case in the Maine Supreme Court. She graduated high school and got into college. She got her first gender-affirming surgery at eighteen and a boyfriend. She achieved her lifelong goal of becoming an actress when she landed a major role in CW's Supergirl, based on the comics she had always loved. Cue sappy music and sunsets, because we've got ourselves a happy ending, right? Ha! Please! Life isn't actually like that! For the first time, in her own words, Nicole tells her story, bringing us on her journey from her childhood in rural Maine to the spotlights of Hollywood, sharing the lessons she's learned along the way. With clever wit and unflinching honesty, she tackles some of the most insidious messaging absorbed by queer kids and all young women, from the idea that any one thing can (or should) ever really "fix" you, to wondering what's wrong with you when things don't always feel better, and reminding us that, sometimes, a happy ending is only the beginning of the story"--

HIDDEN FROM PLAIN SIGHT is a book about ordinary life and the elements of our daily existence: work, family and friendships, which in their ordinariness can be a good setting for Christian life to develop and for contributing to the good of society. The stories that illustrate the narrative can be taken on two levels: entertaining or as an inspiration to make a change in one's life. Through them, I have tried to illustrate that ordinary life can be a platform to greater things. The book might be a help to those who want to deepen their faith or as a kind of program for Christian living. "Everyday life is a true setting for your life as a Christian." (St. Josemaría) Or, as someone put it in a letter to the editor of one of the national newspapers referring to some controversial issue: "Why don't they let God have a look in?" Perhaps this sounds like a good idea ... why don't we?

I was extremely broken, both inside and out. I lived under the guise that I could successfully take charge of my being and right the wrongs done to me. Raised in the church, I knew God; however, at 5 years old, my little life was violated, and thus began 11+ years of sexual abuse that created awful patterns of thinking that led to many more years not loving the skin that I was in. Trust destroyed by those that "supposedly" loved me the most, a series of bad relationships, to a horrific act causing me to almost take the life of someone I didn't even know. After years of faking it all, an attempt to take my own life, suffering from PTSD and Borderline Personality Disorder, I was incarcerated for 11.4 years. But for His grace, I live to share my way out of that abyss. I am proof that change is absolutely possible and that by following His will and walking in humility; forgiveness, joy, success, and favor is exactly what He had planned for me. Sometimes, we have to go through to get through. These are my truths. Today, I am Living Life on, and with, P.U.R.P.O.S.E.
