  • - Fifty Years in Kittery Point
    av Ken Fellows
    200,-

Chauncey Creek Road is about two miles long. Where it crosses a small causeway to Cutt's Island, its name changes to Seapoint Road, which runs a mile to Seapoint Beach on the open Atlantic Ocean. Houses line both sides of Chauncey Creek Road itself, but less densely on the water-side of the street, where many homes are close to the creek's edge. Most homes on the opposite side of the road, like ours, are situated on a slope that is 15-20 feet above the road. The houses are a mix of Capes, Farmhouse Victorians, and Colonials. This book is partly about the people in those houses -- our neighbors, friends, and acquaintances on Chauncey Creek Road. It's also a collection of local history, and some contemporary events and remembrances that have occurred during our near 50 years in Kittery Point.

To do some stories justice, you must start at their end.The poetry collection Timeline of Us flips the entirety of an on-again-off-again, junior-year relationship onto its head. It encompasses the transitional stages of growth and decay through its back-turned depiction of a relationship fraught with misrecognition, miscommunication, and naivety that is so often present in teenage attempts to navigate love.Contentment and closure mark the beginning of this collection, and the following pages detail the raw, in-the-moment documentation of anger, severing of ties, troubled skepticism, and initial infatuation.

I've done wrong, I hurt, and I've hurt others. A life of rejection, judgment, and heartbreak was normal to me. In 1979, I dove into a world of self-destruction-prostitution, drugs, and abuse-it kept me breathing. But I was long gone, a walking dead soul who attracted abuse, fear, and death at every turn. Each unfavorable event left a scar on my onyx skin that I couldn't escape. I tried seducing death, but it played with me instead. As I've said, "Death didn't even want me." I married for love and received abuse from a heroin addict.

  • - Uma Jornada Sem Máscaras
    av Gonçalo Jn Dias
    173,-

  • - (from every job I've ever had)
    av Molly Hardy
    159,-

Mix the dry humor of David Sedaris with a splash of Joan Didion's disillusioned angst and the honest hopelessness of Charles Bukowski, and this story will make you laugh and cry out loud."So, how does a creative person survive, much less succeed, working a routine job? And I don't mean a career; I'm talking about the day-in-day-out, mundane jobs that suck the lifeblood out of people."This book is an often-familiar story about a creative person striving to make ends meet while pursuing her passion for writing and theatre. As told through the eyes of a struggling playwright in an often hilarious and dramatic style, Hardy views her years of strife as fodder for a book about failure yet finding a life purpose in pursuing a dream and discovering true confidence and self-respect. An authentic glimpse into how one artist managed to earn a living while chasing her dream, even at the cost of financial security, feelings of failure, and her self-confidence. Hardy's insight into constantly being fired, refusing to be a victim, and continuing her journey is honest, insightful, and refreshing. Her past employers include movie studio executives, well-known Hollywood celebrities, and even a cult. It's an improbable story written as only a true drama queen could, with deep insight and perception, often conveying her gallows humor and abiding flair for tragedy. Jan Kovac, author, What Does Love See?

This is the story of Bob "Rocket" Sturm. Everyone called him Rocket. He flew jets for 35 years for Transworld Airlines (TWA).By the 1970's, the advent of the commercial jet has made the world much smaller. Tribes in the Amazon and other remote countries were discovered, foreign relations were made and broken, and pilots and flight attendants were at the forefront of the Sexual Revolution. The advent of "The Pill" has given men and women the power to have one-night stands. The frivolousness and liberty of the jet age was the perfect catalyst. Captains were the pinnacle of professionalism and manliness. The Captain was next to God. Were all the stories about cockpits and layovers true? Well, I don't know. But the ones that I will tell you are.

  • - A Police Dog's Tale
    av Mal Nutbrown
    132,-

This story follows the journey of Mal and his four-legged ally, Zaxon Moonraker, in the police force. As Mal writes, forgotten memories from his childhood and teenage years abruptly resurface, turning the tale into an insightful personal narrative, leading up to 1986 when he initially joins forces with Zaxon Moonraker. The story sheds light on the formative encounters and decisions that moulded him - from young stripling, police cadet and policeman, and, finally, to dog handler. It is an alluring, often amusing narrative of Mal's childhood, moving onto his career from a sixteen-year-old cadet to the conclusion of his thirty-three-year service. During their time together, Zac and his handler forged an invincible partnership, establishing themselves as a reliable force in protecting the police and public. Mal had no problem taking centre stage, speaking to schools and organisations about what it meant to be a dog handler, sometimes providing demonstrations of their training. He even became an instructor, sharing his knowledge whilst training other handlers. The stories in this book offer a stirring glimpse into the ups and downs of being a police officer, some familiar, some never before revealed to relatives. Now they too can join in the extraordinary journey that comes with protecting and serving others.

  • - Confessions of A Single Mother
    av Tiffany Ware
    209

Take a journey with me....one you can relate to. A story you've seen or heard....coming from a face you might have never expected. My journey is dealing with manipulative, emotionally unbalanced, emotionally dramatic, mentally draining, mentally unhealthy, and unstable behaviors. My journey is emotional abuse. It's real and a not talked about subject that needs to be discussed. Yes it may be hard to recognize at first, because these discussions are not happening. If a feelings conversation is happening 9/10 we are not getting to the root of the problem. Emotional abuse is a slow, silent killer. The abuser is being humiliating, derogatory, name-calling, assassinating your character, patronizing, yelling, dismissive, belittles you, berates you, threatens you, digitally spies on you, financially controlling, random outbursts, unpredictability, uses people, turns the tables, constantly in denial of the truth, uses guilt, trivializing, blaming others for their problems, always demanding respect, dehumanizing you, shutting you down, trying to come between you and your family, actively working to turn people against you, saying your needy, interrupting, not accepting to your feelings, just to name a few. Over time that can weigh heavy on a person's and shatter a person's psychological state of mind. It can make you think things, do things, act a certain way, become a certain way, because this person has created this dark, illuminating, crazy, havoc filled playground, where you're the action figure (s) and he (the kid) doesn't want to share his toy (s).Emotional /mental abuse is abuse, and it's just as serious as physical abuse. Any type of abuse is unacceptable. My journey is one of love, tried patience, realization, looking past flaws, trying to move on, heal, & forgive. But, still continuously getting hurt, used, and abused. A journey of putting my children first before me. Teaching them how to continually be kind and respectful to their father who was in and out of their life and at times being dismissive and emotionally hurtful to them. My journey is finding me through my faith, standing tall at all times, and not letting go of my strength, even when I wanted to. My journey is similar to your journey....you ready?!? Let's go!

  • - A Memoir
    av Alvin J Schexnider
    385,-

In this book, retired university president Alvin J. Schexnider shares the lived experiences that shaped his career and the challenges presented by race. About half of his career was spent at white universities. He details how he navigated those challenges in spite of longstanding policies and practices. He examines how certain events of his youth shaped his views on race including segregation, the execution of a Black man in his hometown, lynching in the South, and the pervasive opposition and violence spawned by the civil rights movement. The second half of his career was spent at historically Black universities (HBCUs) where, as a product of one, he felt a sense of commitment. Schexnider provides a unique lens through which his career evolved from the early days of affirmative action and equal employment opportunity (AA/EEO) to the current era of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). The book spotlights the continuing role of race in the recruitment, promotion and retention of Black faculty, the challenges to DEI, and its ability to effect change. It contrasts affirmative action and diversity and argues that diversity is more likely to benefit other ethnic groups rather than Blacks based on current trends in higher education. The book concludes with a chapter on the future of HBCUs, a sector of higher education that is currently receiving unprecedented attention but is likely fleeting. This chapter acknowledges the challenges and opportunities HBCUs face and it offers strategies to put them on a sustainable path to secure their future.

Honest, humorous, poignant, and raw with emotion...Judy Kowalsky's life is filled with alcoholism, suicide, and tragic loss. As an adult, the author encounters more heartbreaking catastrophes before realizing that she has spent a lifetime meeting the same personalities, experiencing challenging emotional years of learned behaviors and actions that go well beyond childhood. Maybe you will see yourself in her recollections. Maybe you will see someone you know in them, but the author asks: What will you do when you look into the eyes of an innocent child whose potential for abuse is imminent?"The Art of Bristle is a book about one woman's journey to find herself after years of a painful life. A painful life is often found, but never shared. Thankfully, Judy Kowalsky is ready to share. Her book is full of honesty, acceptance of being an adult child of an alcoholic, pain, loss, and grief in her life. However, it is not just about her but includes all who identify with her. I strongly recommend her book. As you read it you will realize that it teaches and touches your heart.Judy's heart is in this book."-Robert J. Ackerman, PhD, Author of Perfect Daughters,Adult Daughters of Alcoholics and Co-founder of theNational Association for Children of Addiction"Many of us spend adulthood processing childhood, developmentally stuck at points of trauma, often feeling isolated and different until we find healing. Through sharing her pain, Judy's path toward regeneration gifts others with the knowledge that we are not alone. The Art of Bristle, like Judy, is authentic, gently written by an empathic, faithful soul who found a way out of darkness, fear and anger borne through cruelty and judgement.Judy's memories, while beautifully penned, send one back to the safety and innocence of childhood and then step repeatedly outside of inviolability. Judy artfully paints pictures of her life, relating struggles of growing up too soon, bearing misplaced blame, becoming an actress portraying normalcy, developing survival skills, establishing boundaries, accepting that sometimes there are no answers and ultimately embracing self-acceptance and forgiveness. Those who practice in any medical or mental health clinic setting should read The Art of Bristle to understand better who sits in the chair across from them. Those who have experienced abuse, and its sequelae will hopefully realize that we are blameless, that we are and always have been more than adequate, and that we are neither too much, nor too little. We are intelligent, we are kind; we are enough; we love, and we are loved.I knew Judy in high school, a sweet, quiet girl with a beautiful smile who hid her pain well, as I did mine. We didn't talk about abuse back then and hid our bruises. Hopefully, this book will contribute to effecting change, beginning dialogues, reducing stigma, and encouraging the acceptance and promotion of people seeking help." ~ Dr. Sherry Lynn Jones, EdD, RN, MS, Author of Confessions of a Trauma Junkie and More Confessions of a Trauma Junkie
