Introducing "The Man Named Elvis Presley"!

  • av Timothy Burke Licsw
    199,-

Children don't thrive in the home of an alcoholic; they merely survive, and often just barely. It's a lonely, desolate existence, and tragically, it can spiral into even more darker depths. An inspirational story of resilience, recovery, and hope leading to freedom. This is written from the heart, and it shows. It's not merely a story of overcoming external battles but a journey toward internal healing and the reclamation of one's true self. -Charlie G. This story follows the path of a boy's traumatic life, whose dad, once an invincible Boston firefighter, created a tumultuous environment of uncertainty and fear due to his alcoholism and abuse. In vivid detail, the story illustrates how a family from a public housing project in South Boston experienced trauma and loss and how these events and community norms perpetuated substance use disorder. First responders pay a significant emotional and physical cost, resulting in a closed culture in which brother firefighters only trust each other for support. Unfortunately, alcohol abuse becomes a powerful coping mechanism for the emotional challenges they face. First responders grapple with fear, untreated trauma, self-doubt, helplessness, disappointments, and shame. The job often changes them; sadly, they don't see it. If they do, they do not have a solution. Repeated exposure to critical incidents affects their personalities, causing strained relationships with their families and often leaving them angry and distant. The result means more self-medication and alcohol dependency, with the family bearing the brunt of the burden. This memoir powerfully recounts the traumatic experience of a boy raised in an alcoholic home, demonstrating how he struggles with alcoholism despite his resolute determination not to repeat his father's behavior. The vivid, traumatic details and losses that this boy experienced come to life and place the reader in the family living room, allowing them to experience the painful reality of a child growing up with an active alcoholic. Unfortunately, like many children raised in alcoholic homes exposed to the violence of an active alcoholic, the path has been paved. The decision to continue the cycle of alcoholism and all its painful regrets has been made despite one's best efforts. However, there is hope and understanding as we follow this boy on his journey through addiction, recovery, and redemption.

  • - The Intertidal Zone
    av Susan Starbird
    250

Kayak racer and mud connoisseur Susan Starbird explores the physics and metaphysics of kayaking in this contribution to the cult literature of paddlesport. In a series of lyric essays about this challenging, addictive, and humbling activity, her topics range widely across the tragicomic spectrum, from a meditation on paddling, the "autobiography" of a unicellular organism, boat evolution, observations on river bottoms, drowning, flotsam, boater access, competition, and a culminating cross-referenced index titled "Everything I Know About Kayaking." This slim volume contains no heroic tales of first descents or global adventure, but plenty of references to mundane B.K.D.s -- bad kayaker decisions -- and as all boaters know, bad decisions can make good stories. The 2nd edition includes new material.

  • - captivating stories from fifty years of mentoring through coaching
    av Daniel Merritt
    249,-

One of my greatest joys in life has been for five decades mentoring fledging runners and watching them mature and soar like an eagle to heights they never dreamed possible. Nothing makes the soul richer than investing in others and striving to positively influence them spiritually, relationally, and productively. Nothing brings an athlete more satisfaction than knowing the intense training in which they have been engaged has reaped dividends that exceeded expectations. There is no greater reward a coach receives than knowing the spiritual and life lessons an athlete has learned from their successes and failures has been woven into the fabric of their character in their everyday living. There is no greater inner contentment experienced than when a mentor perceives a life has been impacted and influenced for the better. Such a realization is both a humbling and an honored privilege. • - Poems - Poesie
    av Beppe Manca
    216,-

The poems gathered in Words Murmurations are primarily organized chronologically reflecting the period of their creation during my travels in Europe in 2018-19. A few more, written more recently in NYC, where I currently live, were added to those composed during my time abroad. Among them all, some were penned in English, others took form in Italian. However, the desire to share them with both my Italian and American friends ultimately sparked the inception of this bilingual undertaking.

  • av Sheila Newton
    139,-

This book is about my own personal experiences. I was very young when I first discovered that life wasn't all sweetness and light. My story starts with my first experience of love and the harshness of reality. Whilst I realise that there are many people that have probably experienced far worse than myself, I can only give them my sympathy and hope that eventually life will treat them better. On the other hand, I have come across people that seem to sail through life without a care in the world. I recall a conversation I once had with a good friend, where we both felt that maybe ignorance was bliss. If you don't think about things too much you tend not to see the bad. The second part of my story is still a little bit of a puzzle, as I still don't know the absolute truth, I wonder if I ever will. I have never been a materialistic person, I don't need to own things, or to go on expensive holidays, which is probably why I find it so hurtful that people can put money and possessions before others. Its very easy to feel sorry for someone, but far more rewarding to be able to help someone when they need it. I write what I feel, which can sometimes please and other times offend. It is not my intention to deliberately hurt someone but I do tend to speak my mind nowadays rather than bottle it up inside and find that I, once again, am the only person that is hurting.

    av Jim Santangelo
    180,-

In Jersey City - A Time To Remember, Jim Santangelo remembers the best and a few of the worst experiences he had starting out as a kid in a tough neighborhood on Boyd Avenue. In writing his book, Santangelo has created not only a legacy for his family and friends, but he shares his humor, sorrows, and details of deeply-rooted relationships that he's nurtured throughout his lifetime. He has managed to capture detailed memories in a highly personal, nostalgic, and narrative format from the early forties to today and he articulates them with great heart. It becomes immediately apparent how much his family means to him as he consistently acknowledges their undeniable love and support of his successes and, in turn, he unabashedly, sets that example for his amazing children: John, Debra, Michelle & James. His collection of stories is both honest and rewarding. Jim Santangelo is a 50-year Teamster veteran who served as the International Vice-President under Jimmy Hoffa, Jr., prior to retirement. e began driving trucks in his home state following an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1959. Among the many charities Teamsters support, he arranged for massive food donations to military families in need. His commitment to community led him to volunteer on the USS Iowa and join the El Monte Police Department as a reserve officer where he is a Lieutenant. Among his many accomplishments, Jim Santangelo is proud to be a member of the Patriot Guard Riders whose main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes and participate in the annual Run For The Wall in honor of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

  • - Instincts of a Rustbelt Feminist
    av Sherrie Flick
    232,-

Homing: Instincts of a Rustbelt Feminist traces the creative coming of age of a mill-town feminist. Sherrie Flick, whose childhood spanned the 1970s rise and 1980s collapse of the steel industry, returned to Pittsburgh in the late 1990s, witnessing the region's before and its after. With essays braiding, unbraiding, and then tangling the story of the author's father with Andy Warhol, faith, dialect, labor, whiskey, Pittsburgh's South Side Slopes neighborhood, grief, gardening, the author's compulsion to travel, and her reluctance to return home, Flick examines how place shaped her experiences of sexism and feminism. She also looks at the changing food and art cultures and the unique geography that has historically kept this weird hilly place isolated from trendy change. Carefully researched, deeply personal, and politically grounded in place and identity, Homing is an explicitly feminist and anti-nostalgic intervention in writing about the Rustbelt.

"The world begins and ends here", said my father as we drove over the Brooklyn Bridge and peered into the heart of the city. For him, New York was everything. It was America. He believed one fell off the edge of the earth once they left the city. There was no place like New York.It was the American Dream.Anything was possible in New York City.More photos, films, stories, and books have been written about it than nearly any other city. Why? It is unique in the breadth and depth of its culture, diversity, wealth, poverty, conflict, and endless variety of change that comes in waves from one generation to another. It is my town where I went to school, found a job, was married and where my children were born.It prepared me for excitement, disappointment, and success."If I could make it there, I could make it anywhere."The tales in these pages are about souls. These are our stories about those who yearn for "The City That Never Sleeps" or as O. Henry called it "Baghdad on the Hudson," a population of poets, bandits, workers, risk takers, gamblers, lovers, politicians, and benefactors. If you adore New York City and love good stories, you will love this book. They will make you cry and laugh and think and want to chase your dreams. This is New York and what follows are accounts from the heart of another era when the city was defined not by its wealth but by those who loved it and lived it.

  • - George McAuliffe's Testimony
    av Brendan McCauley
    200,-

George and Sheila McAuliffe from Co. Kerry, Ireland were typical Catholics going about their daily lives when tragedy struck in the form of their first-born son, three-year-old David, being diagnosed with terminal cancer. God graciously revealed Himself to George and Sheila in the mist of their terrible grief and pain. George said, I often think David like Jesus' Mother Mary paid a big price, but his suffering and death opened the door for Sheila and me to come to a living faith and an intimate relationship with Jesus through his Holy Spirit. Sheila always said 1973 was the best year of our lives, which sounds contradictory considering that was the year we lost our beautiful boy. George was seeking for answers. He said, Five days after David's death I told Sheila I'd like to have a prayer meeting in our home with a few people. I wanted to read the Bible and see what sense was to be made of David's death. Sheila agreed. I invited Rev Ted Woods and some folk from the Church of Ireland and some of my fellow Catholic teachers. On November 19th 1973 twelve of us met in our front room for our first ever prayer meeting. I'd no idea what was supposed to happen. We read and discussed the Bible. Ted Woods was the only one of us who knew how to pray spontaneously in his own words. We agreed to meet for ten weeks and if nothing of any significance happened by that time we'd just let it all go. But significant things did happen. God filled George and Sheila with His Holy Spirit and showed them signs and wonders they never thought possible. George and Sheila remained within the Catholic Church and held a Thursday night weekly prayer meeting in their own home for over forty years. George writes, In the summer of 1975, I went to my first Charismatic Conference in Dublin. There was tremendous excitement in the air. Thousands were singing and praying and praising in tongues. At one point I raised my hands and said, Okay Lord, here goes, tongues or burst. And immediately out of my mouth poured a river of words I'd never learned. Full Gospel meetings were always an experience. It was always encouraging and inspiring to hear how God was working in ordinary people's lives. We overcame Satan by the blood of the lamb and the power of our testimony. The meetings weren't just about teaching and preaching. There was usually a tangible demonstration of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. People were healed. People were delivered. Miracles happened. Prayers were answered. God was alive and well in our midst. Jesus was the same yesterday today and forever. It wasn't just a ritual. We were constantly experiencing God in brand new ways. Our County Kerry Gaelic team had their Golden Days and sometimes I think of the Golden Days of the Holy Spirit in County Kerry. The beginning was exciting and exhilarating, full of heady hope and promise. A new wind of the Holy Spirit was sweeping the land and Acts 29 was taking place in Ireland.
