This volume is a collection of letters saved by my grandmother, Mariette van Steenwyk Cassels Winship Polk Land (1905-1993). I first discovered them with a some of Mariette's stamp albums and assumed they were just part of her collection. But on closer examination it was clear that the correspondence had been saved for more personal reasons. As I read the letters they started to tell a story, a story of my grandmother's school days, courtship and marriage - from Mariette's perspective - as she lived first in Paris and then London - in the years before, during and after World War 2. It is also a love story, cataloging the beginning and end of a marriage.

  • - My Road to Recovery from Addiction
    av D K Sanz
    197,-

Do unsettling truths bring harsh judgment? They do, but the price of denial is steep. D.K. Sanz's story begins in the drug-infested New York City streets of Woodside, Queens, during the tumultuous HIV/AIDS pandemic of the Eighties and Nineties. It offers a glimpse into how a now often-overlooked pandemic impacted Sanz's nuclear family. Her triumph over illness and addiction includes amusing anecdotes and nostalgic, heartwarming memories. Deep-dive into Sanz's confessional self-sabotage, self-destruction, and the harrowing downward spiral she almost didn't survive. Her never-before-told story ranges from recklessness and impudence to empathy, forgiveness, and love.Sanz has since published several books under the name Kyrian Lyndon, primarily poetry but also a novel, and she continues to work on sequels and an all-new fantasy series. You'll find some of her poetry at the end of this book. Whether struggling or not, you will find Grateful to be Alive is a story of hope, defying insurmountable odds, finding joy, and a gradual transition toward authenticity and becoming the person Sanz always wanted to be. "When you begin this book, you will not put it down. You will immediately be drawn into Sanz's bold narrative of a woman, throughout her life, passing through "every forbidden door," as she says of herself. It is a book of continual growth through experience, defeat, and triumph. The prose is swift, concise, full of irony, truth, and poise. You will not find a more startling, revealing memoir. Highly, highly recommended." Jason T. • - A Memoir of the Surprising Work of the Holy Spirit at Hope College 1994-2000
    av Ben Patterson
    209

"What happened in the 1990s at Hope, and is still happening, is nothing short of remarkable and spectacular-a dramatic and massive work of the Holy Spirit producing conversions and spiritual renewal and a call to missions and Christian ministry on a grand scale. "I call it a 'revival, ' not only because the word is accurate, but also because it has been the common term used throughout American history for this kind of event. A 'revival' at Hope was for years what many had prayed for. That's the proper noun I started to use as the title of this book, 'A Memoir of the Hope Revival.' "The story of the Hope College revival is a great story. I only hope I can do it justice." From Chapter 1, An Exclamation Point (Or why I wrote this memoir) After pastoring Presbyterian churches in California and New Jersey, Ben Patterson served as Dean of the Chapel at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, from 1994 to 2000. He subsequently served as Campus Pastor at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, from 2000 to 2018. He has been married to Lauretta, the love of his life, for over fifty years, and is blessed to be living in Carpinteria, California, near all four of his adult children and their families, which include eleven spirited grandchildren. He is the author of several books, including The Grand Essentials, Waiting, Serving God, Prayer Devotional Bible, God's Prayer Book, and Praying the Psalms Devotional.

  • - On Love and Cancer
    av Ariel Gore
    185,-

Deena stepped out of the shower and opened her towel in the steam. "Does my breast look weird?'' These words irrevocably changed the lives of writer Ariel Gore and her wife, Deena. As they descend into a world of doctors and tests, medications and insurance, sickness and treatments and hope and pain and more, they discover just how little they truly knew about the reality of breast cancer, in spite of the awareness campaigns and hyper-visible pink ribbons. Along the way, Ariel Gore does what she always does no matter how difficult or personal the subject: she writes about it. With keen insights, empathy, and humor, Ariel Gore braids together the story of Deena's and her lives, narratives from other people with embodied experience of breast cancer, literary reflections on cancer and illness, and chapters delving into the history of breast cancer treatment and the cynical corporations in the $200 billion industry that capitalize on and profit from breast cancer screenings and treatments. Rehearsals for Dying investigates and challenges everything we think we know about breast cancer. It goes beyond awareness to knowledge and reality, presenting a rich, nuanced, heartbreaking, and hopeful portrait of what it is to be diagnosed with, treat, and live with breast cancer in the 21st century.

  • av Lauren Markham
    175,-

"I am in need of a word," writes Lauren Markham in an email to the Bureau of Linguistical Reality, an organization that coins neologisms. She describes her desire to memorialize something that is in the process of being lost--a landscape, a species, birdsong. How do we mourn the abstracted casualties of what's to come? In a dazzling synthesis of reporting, memoir, and essay, Markham reflects on the design and function of memorials, from the traditional to the speculative--the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC, a converted prison in Ljubljana, a "ghost forest" of dead cedar trees in a Manhattan park--in an attempt to reckon with the grief of climate catastrophe. Can memorials look toward the future as they do to the past? How can we create "a psychic space for feeling" while spurring action and agitating for change?Immemorial is part of the Undelivered Lectures series from Transit Books.
