Exploring the relationship between theory and practice in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), this volume offers a state-of-the-art overview of Appliable Linguistics. Featuring both internationally-renowned scholars and rising stars from Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Chile, Denmark, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore and the USA, Appliable Linguistics and Social Semiotics examines the theoretical insights, questions, and developments that have emerged from the application of Systemic Functional theory to a range of fields. Beyond simply reporting on the application of SFL to particular sites of communication, both linguistic and semiotic, this volume demonstrates how SFL has critiqued, developed and transformed theory and practice and foregrounds the implications of application for Systemic Functional theory itself. Covering established fields for application, such as education, medicine and media, to relatively uncharted areas, such as software design and extremist propaganda, this volume provides an overview of recent linguistic and semiotic innovations informed by SFL and examines the advances that have been made from many years of productive dialogue between theory and practice.

Doyle's World is no ordinary book. It is instead a work that deciphers the cryptic origins and actual scientifi c methods used by fi ction's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes--and provides a detailed look into the psyche and working life of Holmes' creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Revealed here for the fi rst time--by son-father writing team Daniel Friedman, MD, and Eugene Friedman, MD--are the inspirations behind the physical, emotional, and intellectual characteristics that Doyle wove together so deftly to bring his legendary sleuth to life. The authors o er research-based answers to such intriguing questions as: ■ From whom did Sherlock Holmes actually learn the art of detective work? ■ Why did Doyle kill off Sherlock Holmes-- and how did the country of Japan inspire how he brought his famous detective back to life after nearly a decade? ■ What story elements did Doyle borrow from Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island? ■ How did Doyle apply his fervent belief in Spiritualism to a variety of Holmes stories? ■ Who inspired Doyle to write about civil rights after a steamship journey in 1882? ■ How did the women in Doyle's life come to influence the relationships with women that both Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have across sixty written adventures? The book is divided into three sections. The fi rst is dedicated to the elements--both good and bad--that comprised Doyle's childhood and early adult years, and how an assemblage of persons and places and things from his life found their way into his literature. The second section emphasizes the complex themes and plots present in the Sherlock Holmes adventures, while it also examines some of Doyle's strengths--and weaknesses--as a public fi gure of his time. And in the book's concluding part, the authors o er two "lost" stories they uncovered that were written by Doyle under a pseudonym. Doyle's World is a work of rich detail and in-depth scholarship that should win over established fans of Doyle and devoted "Sherlockians" everywhere--and which should engage, and entertain, all others who enter this intriguing hall of literary mirrors.

    av Rumini Peña
    107,-

  • - Wrongful Accusations in the United Kingdom
    av Kevin Felstead
    187,-

Over the past thirty years, thousands of ordinary people have been accused of crimes they've never committed by individuals whose memories are distorted. This book documents the catastrophic impact of these false memories in the criminal justice system in the United Kingdom, which has seen families torn apart, and hundreds of innocent people imprisoned. For more than a decade Dr Kevin Felstead witnessed many of these trials first-hand whilst working for one of the country's leading miscarriages of justice charities. His new book Memory & Injustice - Wrongful Accusations in the United Kingdom is drawn from his extensive courtroom experience and criminological research from that time. It is a must-read for parents, criminal justice practitioners, journalists, social commentators, and students of criminology, history, law, psychology, and sociology.

  • - The South Asian Experience
    av M Ehteshamul Bari
    1 791

This book sheds light on the fact that the proclamation of an emergency can be a legitimate constitutional method to take prompt preventative measures in protecting the interests of the society in times of grave crises. However, the exercise of emergency powers should not undermine a nation's commitment to democratic values, such as maintaining the rule of law and upholding fundamental human rights. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed grave threats to the lives and health of individuals. However, since the constitutions of South Asian nations do not permit the proclamation of an emergency on health grounds, executives of these nations were constrained to rely, among other things, on ordinary legislation to tide over the threats posed by the pandemic. Although these statutes entrust the executive with extensive emergency powers, they do not simultaneously stipulate any safeguards subjecting the exercise of such powers to a reliable system of checks and balances. Accordingly, this book critically examines the exercise of emergency powers in the South Asian nations to tide over threats posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a profoundly adverse impact on the human rights of individuals. Such exercise of powers was consistent with the general tendency demonstrated by succeeding generations of the executives in these nations to use emergency situations as the convenient means for imposing long-lasting limitations on the rights of individuals. Consequently, this book identifies the flaws, deficiencies, and lacunae of the legal framework in these nations, which permit the executive to assume unfettered power in the exercise of emergency measures at the expense of the liberty of individuals. Consequently, based on these findings, recommendations will be put forward for initiating reforms in these nations aimed at ensuring the maintenance of a delicate balance between the necessity to respond tograve threats and to simultaneously prevent undue intrusion on the fundamental human rights of individuals.

This book reflects the latest legal development of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and makes direct and positive responses--it uses first-hand, authoritative information and makes insightful and persuasive analyses in addressing those concerns. In particular, this book provides nuanced analysis of the following topics: -- capital allocation of the AIIB, in comparison with those of Bretton Woods institutions;-- dynamic relationship between the shareholder board and management, a central topic of corporate governance for the AIIB and other MDBs;-- AIIB's environmental and social safeguards, including its frontier ESG portfolio investments, in comparison with the World Bank standards;-- highly debatable issues relating to the interaction between AIIB, Belt and Road, and MCDF;-- comparative study of state-owned enterprises in the laws of AIIB, WTO, ICSID, etc..This book targets academics, students, policymakers, and businesscircles who are interested in AIIB, given the bank's growing importance in the context of global economic governance reforms. First, the book is a must for those who are keen to gain insight into the AIIB. Ten years have passed since the debut of the idea of AIIB in 2013, and the topic has never retreated from the debate of the international community--a major concern is whether a China-led multilateral development bank (MDB) remains to be politically neutral, or professional, and can live up to high standards.

This book uses humanity-rationality and experience and the freedom of human will as a theoretical perspective to examine the basic framework of criminal law theories constructed by the criminal classic school and the criminal empirical school. The author puts forward the principle of the duality of rationality and experience of humanity and affirms the determinism of human behavior in the ontological sense and the freedom of will in the axiological sense. From this point of view, this book examines the humanistic foundations of crime and punishment, legislation and justice.

This book offers an in-depth analysis of and multidisciplinary insights into the latest trends in biodiversity laws, policies and science in Europe, the United States, and China. The loss of biodiversity and degradation of ecosystems continues at an alarming rate, harming people, the economy, and the climate. As biodiversity cannot be meaningfully addressed by any single field, a multidisciplinary approach is needed to attain a better understanding of its complexity and to identify prevention and protection systems. Each chapter addresses a specific aspect of biodiversity. Taken together, they provide an innovative exploration of the various facets of biodiversity from the perspectives of law, the social sciences and natural sciences. As such, the book offers an essential theoretical and practical guide for academics, experts, policymakers, and students alike.

    - Conflict or Complementarity?
    av Iulianna Romanchyshyna
    1 335,-

This book examines the interplay between cooperation on technical barriers to trade (TBT) in free trade agreements and the multilateral framework of the World Trade Organization. In recent years, TBT, especially differences in standards, have attracted increased interest and have been addressed as part of the WTO+ negotiated agenda in trade agreements. Because of a number of political and legal constraints, the process of further cooperation at the WTO have been stalled, which made free trade agreements a central pillar in setting the agenda of international trade governance. This leads us to rethinking the interrelation between the WTO and free trade agreements and to questioning the role of both fora in the future of trade. The book examines some TBT provisions in free trade agreements and highlights their positive and problematic aspects when it comes to the WTO-consistency and the ideas of open and inclusive trade. It also suggests that a more optimal way forward would be toincrease parallel work on TBT cooperation at the WTO, a more inclusive forum that could address issues of global significance, such as environmental protection and regulation of digital goods. The book explores the potential for trade agreements to advance the WTO agenda, but notes that the organization would need to adapt its institutional structure and governance in order to do so.Drawing on the example of the EU and US so-called "new generation" trade agreements, the book provides a detailed analysis of the various methods used to navigate TBT cooperation, and offers insight into how these agreements can serve as inspiration for future multilateral disciplines. This book is a valuable resource for trade law academics, policymakers, and anyone interested in the intersection of technical barriers to trade, regional trade agreements, and the WTO.
