This textbook considers cases and materials introducing European Union (EU) data protection law to data protection enthusiasts while acting as a reference point for students and practitioners. The book's utility is twofold: the cases and materials can be used as a textbook as well as reference point for research. The book will benefit individuals new to this area and those at an intermediate level of familiarity with data protection law. It includes judgements delivered by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU)/ European Court of Justice (ECJ) and decisions delivered by Data Protection Authorities (DPA) in the EU. While providing an overview of data protection law in the EU, the book introduces basic concepts of data protection law, principles of data protection law and rights and duties and remedies under the data protection law. Students would greatly benefit from the book by using it as an introduction to data protection law and as a reference point for research and assessments. Course instructors would benefit from the book by using it as core reading material.

This book looks at why and how states should legally ban LGBTQ+ 'conversion therapy'. Few states have legislated against the practice, with many currently considering its legal ban. Banning 'Conversion Therapy' brings together leading academics, legal and medical practitioners, policymakers, and activists to illuminate the legislative and non-legislative steps that are required to protect individuals from the harms of 'conversion therapy' in different contexts. The book considers how best to address this complex and interdisciplinary legal problem which cuts across human rights law, criminal law, family law, and socio-legal studies, and which represents one of the key contemporary problems of LGBTQ+ equality and national and international human rights activism.

This book explores how constitutional courts have transformed communication and overcome their reluctance to engage in direct dialogue with citizens. How has the information revolution affected the relationship of constitutional courts with the public and the media? The book looks in detail at the communication strategies of the US Supreme Court, the Supreme Court of Canada, and in Europe the German Federal Constitutional Tribunal, the French Conseil Constitutionnel and the Italian Constitutional Court, arguing that when it comes to the relationship between courts and the media, different jurisdictions share many similarities. It focuses on the consequences of the communication revolution of courts both in terms of their relationship with public opinion and of the legitimacy of judicial review of legislation. Some constitutional courts have attracted criticism by engaging in proactive communication and, therefore, arguably yielding to the temptation of public support. The book argues that objections to the developing institutional communications employed by courts come from a preconceived notion of public opinion. It considers the burden the communication revolution has placed on constitutional courts to achieve a balance between transparency and seclusion, proximity and distance from public opinion. It puts forward important arguments for how this balance can be achieved. The book will interest scholars in constitutional law and public comparative law, sociologists, historians, political scientists, and scholars of media law and communication studies.

Despite a temporary decline in energy usage and emissions resulting from the confinement policies adopted by many states in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the world is not on track to meet the Paris Agreement climate change goals. In order to bridge the 'emissions gap' by 2030, the energy industry is critical to achieving the necessary cuts to emissions, however, it must also balance increasing energy demand with the need to achieve sustainability of energy supply for future generations. This requires the industry to transition from dependence on fossil-fuel sources and look to new technologies that underpin a low-carbon economy. Renewables are central to this transition. The increase in renewable energy capacity globally and the complex and relatively untested nature of renewables projects and the contracts underlying them give rise to a wide range of potential disputes. International arbitration has long been the preferred dispute resolution forum for the energy sector and is well placed to be the leading process for resolving the many and varied disputes that can arise in the lifetime of a renewables project. In light of the increased prevalence of renewable disputes, this Special Report considers:the defining characteristics of renewables projects; the scope for disputes to arise in the implementation of these projects at an inter-state, investor-state and commercial level;the suitability of arbitration to resolve these disputes, and how its processes can be adapted to resolve them in an efficient and effective way; andwhat the future of arbitration of renewable energy disputes might look like. Written for both a legal and non-legal audience, this Special Report is relevant to those interested in learning about the scope for disputes in the renewables sector, how they can be avoided, and how arbitration can best be deployed to prevent delay and help push energy transition forward.
