An exploration of the practice of inventing languages, from speaking in tongues to utopian schemes of universality to the discoveries of modern linguistics. In Imaginary Languages, Marina Yaguello explores the history and practice of inventing languages, from religious speaking in tongues to politically utopian schemes of universality to the discoveries of modern linguistics. She looks for imagined languages that are autonomous systems, complete unto themselves and meant for communal use; imaginary, and therefore unlike both natural languages and historically attested languages; and products of an individual effort to lay hold of language. Inventors of languages, Yaguello writes, are madly in love: they love an object that belongs to them only to the extent that they also share it with a community.Yaguello investigates the sources of imaginary languages, in myths, dreams, and utopias. She takes readers on a tour of languages invented in literature from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, including that in More’s Utopia, Leibniz’s “algebra of thought,” and Bulwer-Lytton’s linguistic fiction. She examines the linguistic fantasies (or madness) of Georgian linguist Nikolai Marr and Swiss medium Hélène Smith; and considers the quest for the true philosophical language. Yaguello finds two abiding (and somewhat contradictory) forces: the diversity of linguistic experience, which stands opposed to unifying endeavors, and, on the other hand, features shared by all languages (natural or not) and their users, which justifies the universalist hypothesis.Recent years have seen something of a boom in invented languages, whether artificial languages meant to facilitate international communication or imagined languages constructed as part of science fiction worlds. In Imaginary Languages (an updated and expanded version of the earlier Les Fous du langage, published in English as Lunatic Lovers of Language), Yaguello shows that the invention of language is above all a passionate, dizzying labor of love.

  • - Geomagnetic Effects on Terrestrial Life
    av Alan Cruice
    394,-

Earth's endemic life exists on an active planet, and its physical characteristics shape its development by affecting it in many ways. The planet's magnetic field plays its part in that scenario. In this new book, the author concentrates on this little-understood aspect of terrestrial life's existence. In an all-pervasive way, Earth's natural magnetism imparts a pulse to the life forms that exist on the planet. From the very simplest to the most complex, organisms cannot ignore their natural magnetic environment. A lot of recent research into this phenomenon has been collated and reviewed by the author. In this book, he appraises the evidence from that research in a scientific yet interesting manner.

About the Book When I decided to write this book, my life made a three hundred and sixty degree turn, and all I had to go on was faith and hope. A new century was also commencing along with my new life, and I was leaving behind happy memories in order to go forward with a new future full of life and love. The best lessons of life are those I have learned from my parents and my children. Equipped with this wisdom I started on my new road in life, aware that the best lessons are those taught by the testimony of life, not with words. It was then that I set the three priorities in my life:God, family and work.God has been generous to me. He has given me the chance to be a father of four children; my youngest daughter Victoria for example continually rejuvenates me with her innocence and spontaneity, and I am working to enhance overall development of families in a country where scientific and technical progress has outdistanced humanistic advances, making this project an authentic necessity. For the last three years, I have gathered a large amount of information, some of it statistical, but more importantly, I have been involved with the experiences and testimonies of families that have lost their way and found it again by their willingness to change and to learn from their mistakes. With this book, I hope to shed some light on the road of life. If reading it lights your way, my work will not be in vain and together we can say that it wasn't in vain; that there a reason for our existence.

This is a book about the practice of a healing ministry in a faith community. The concept of parish nursing is a burgeoning field in nursing practice today and this book offers practical guidelines, tips, and wonderful stories of parish nursing ministry. This book is intended for faith communities, nurses, nursing instructors, faith community leaders, physicians in family practice, and anyone interested in the field of parish nursing. There is useful information for everyone.Barbara's role evolved from her ongoing recognition of changing health care needs. At the same time as the Reverend Granger Westberg began a similar movement in the United States, and before his work was known in Canada, Barbara envisioned how a nurse could promote health and healing in the congregation and the community. As a respected member of a committed, caring ministry team, she developed a practice that included education, advocacy, empowerment, emotional and spiritual support, and connection with community services.Emerging out of her 15 years of experience, this book promotes excellent, practical, "how to" aspects of parish nursing. It is a uniquely Canadian, uniquely nursing, experiential perspective on parish nursing, and a must for anyone interested in this field.
