An essential primer on an important yet understudied type of financial marketMany of the largest financial markets in the world do not organize trade through an exchange but rather operate within a decentralized or over-the-counter (OTC) structure. Understanding how these markets work has become increasingly important in recent years, as illiquidity in certain OTC markets has appeared as the first signs of trouble-if not the cause itself-of the past two financial crises. However, standard models of financial markets are not suitable for studying the causes of illiquidity in OTC markets, nor the optimal policy response. The Economics of Over-the-Counter Markets proposes a unified search-theoretic framework designed to explicitly capture the key features of OTC markets, confront the growing set of stylized facts from these markets, and provide guidance for policies designed to promote liquidity and resiliency. This incisive book covers empirical regularities that are common across OTC markets, develops the methodological tools to analyze the benchmark theoretical models in the academic literature, and extends these models to confront the latest issues facing these markets. Covers a broad range of topics, including asset pricing, liquidity, transaction costs, asymmetric information, financial crises, and market designAn ideal textbook for graduate students in economics and financeAn invaluable resource for policymakers seeking a framework to assess the impact of new developments in fixed-income and short-term funding markets
This essential guide to financial communication provides a concise critical overview of this increasingly important field. It will be of interest to researchers in the fields of public relations, financial communication, accounting and financial management as well as practitioners working in financial PR and investor relations.
The Politics of Death in Anti-colonial Praxis by Gregory Maxaulane explores the political conditions necessary for revolution and freedom. At the intersection of continental philosophy and Black studies, this book examines the political economy of death within the Black experience in South Africa by theorizing death as a productive and generative process. Maxaulane provides a deeper understanding of the politics of death by focusing on how continental philosophy and Black studies treat the problem of praxis as well as the parallels and convergences between the models of praxis they sustain. This book is a comprehensive exploration of these fields, providing critical engagements with the evolution of ideology and the anti-colonial praxis in South African history. Challenging liberal democratic doctrines that have undermined the claims of Black radical imagination, Maxaulane argues that the political economy of death allows us to break from tradition through a concept of freedom not grounded in transcendentalism.
Political Economy of COVID-19: Understanding the Dynamics of a Global Pandemic, provides a theoretical, conceptual and methodological approach to the understanding of the pandemic through multiple case analyses. It produces and discusses COVID-19 research with interdisciplinary perspectives by addressing how the pandemic distinctly impacted the local and global economy and how numerous stakeholders responded. The book is truly global and interdisciplinary, through chapter contributions and case analysis from practitioners and emerging and established scholars. The ideas raised in this book have the potential to take central elements of post-pandemic political, social and economic thinking to a new line of inquiry and provide more compelling nuances. The book will be essential reading for researchers, students and scholars interested in development studies, political economy, historicity of the pandemic, conspiratorial debates and country specific policy response.
New Democratic Initiatives in Authoritarian Twenty-First Century Latin America uses a multidisciplinary approach to understand the coincidence of emerging social movements, seeking more meaningful forms of democratic participation, on the one hand, and the rise of new authoritarian politics that in part rely on chaos and disorder as mechanisms of domination, on the other. This edited collection argues that Latin America has entered a new phase of political and economic volatility in which traditional conceptual divisions between democracy and authoritarianism need to be re-thought. How are democratic movements coping with and reacting to the new right-wing politics of Jair Bolsonaro and Javier Milei, which among other things, attempt to incorporate the popular classes? Does the "second pink tide" offer meaningful avenues for popular empowerment? How are counter hegemonic struggles built? What are the challenges and opportunities faced by women, queer and trans people, cultural workers, people with disabilities and indigenous groups in this conjuncture? These are the key questions addressed in this book.
Political Process: New Perspectives on the Virginia and Bloomington Schools explores political process as emphasized by the Virginia and Bloomington schools of political economy. Though the Virginia school of public choice and Bloomington school of institutional analysis have risen to prominence through the works of James Buchanan, Gordon Tullock, and Elinor Ostrom; their joint emphasis on political process has been neglected. The chapters in this volume explore the idea of political process through a multi-disciplinary perspective and to better situate both schools in this discussion. Approximately half the chapters make theoretical contributions, proposing new frameworks for understanding how people come together to make collective decisions. The other half examine applied case studies through a process-oriented framework.
Shifting Production to Southeast Asia: Electronics Transnational Corporations Moving to Vietnam since the 2000s explores how a labor-intensive industry has been expanded from the 'World Factory' - China to developing Southeast Asia under the changing dynamics in the global and regional production networks, including the recent COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tension, by using the case study of the production relocations of the consumer electronics manufacturing industry to Vietnam. David Yuen Tung Chan and Chun Yang explore the changing trade and investment patterns as well as the transformations of the electronics production networks and the changing roles and functions of China, Vietnam and other Asian countries, the relocations of firms and the strategic coupling with Vietnam, as well as the impacts of the post-pandemic dynamics. The shifting electronics production from China to Vietnam, which increased since the mid-2000s, is not a simple expansion led by the conventional lead firms from the 'North' solely to cut costs, but it is a rather complicated and multiscale process that has been simultaneously driven by various tiers of firms and levels of governments from different origins out of various dynamics at different spatial scales.
The Routledge Handbook of Early Modern Korea presents an interdisciplinary survey of Korea's politics, society, economy, and culture from the founding of the Chos¿n state (1392-1897) to 1873.
