Governance and management have a big problem. Organizations must learn to thrive in our highly interdependent world, even as that world is changing more rapidly and in more unpredictable and uncontrollable ways. Organizations need to become much more situation aware.Situation awareness is a mainstay of air force and military doctrine, nuclear power plant management, aviation, and ERs, among others. These are all disciplines where mistakes in understanding a situation and predicting its outcome may not only be costly but also fatal. Top-Gun Governance adapts and scales insights and practices from the field of situation awareness to promote better sense making and prediction throughout your whole organization.More than "big data," this next-generation governance will help you challenge your decision-making biases, recognize when events and trends are breaking current rules and assumptions, and manage the changes they inevitably bring. This is a book for leaders and those who must see changes with clear-eyed dispassion and create, implement, and sustain a culture of change in a highly dynamic world. How did this book come about? In a word, COVID. How did public health guidance, which had been successful in managing past epidemics, become so contentious? This question led to the following train of thought:Why change programs are so difficult when even simple interventions, like mask wearing, are rejected by large segments of the population, to...Thinking that different situations, characterized by their degree of unpredictability, require different communication and change-management techniques, to...Understanding how cognitive biases take hold and reinforce positions that become very entrenched, to...Realizing that concepts and practices in situation awareness, a discipline used extensively in environments where mistakes can be fatal, could be a good approach, to...Using experience in organization architecture to describe ways in which situation awareness could be scaled to the organization level under the umbrella of governanceSo yes, a somewhat convoluted path but one that I hope demonstrates the breadth and depth of focus in looking at very complex problems and one that informs this book.1

The topic of the creative economy has been the subject of debate more and more frequently due to the recognition of its potential for a country's development. The aim of this research is to investigate whether students on the Bachelor of Business Administration course offered by the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Southeast Minas Gerais, Barbacena Campus, are being prepared to work in companies within a creative economy context. To this end, a qualitative, exploratory study was carried out, comprising a bibliographical survey, documentary research and semi-structured interviews applied to students on the Administration course, with non-probabilistic, convenience and intentional sampling. The documentary research involved analysing the syllabus of the Business Administration course in order to verify aspects relevant to the training of managers working in companies with a creative profile. Content analysis was used to analyse the data collected.

*A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!* Think differently and find the courage to challenge the status quo with this mindset-shifting guide to meaningful change. For most of our lives, we are encouraged to trudge along the well-worn paths of those who have come before us. We learn the rules – in our families, in our schools, in our workplaces, in our churches – and most of the messages we receive tell us that following the rules will allow us to arrive at the lives we desire.    But when change becomes not only desirable but also urgently necessary, this way of being no longer serves us. In fact, in every human endeavor, every major leap forward, has involved a cataclysmic challenge to existing ways of thinking and being. Breakthroughs, by definition, run against the grain and almost always encounter skepticism and opposition.    In this book for leaders, thinkers, doers, and creators, Bishop T.D. Jakes illuminates the pathway to encouraging and unleashing disruptive thinking and provides the wisdom and practical skills we need to evolve our most original and potentially transformational ideas from vision to reality. Through his insight into how our minds and emotions work and through his experiences as a pastor, entrepreneur, and creator, Bishop Jakes leads us into a new way of relating to and transforming the world around us for good. Disruptive Thinking will show you the mindset and the tools you need to create groundbreaking and meaningful change in your own life and in the world around you.A Study Guide is also available for purchase.

This book evaluates off-grid solar electrification in Africa by examining how political, economic, institutional, and social forces shape the adoption of off-grid solar technologies, including how issues of energy injustice are manifested at different levels and spaces. The book takes a historical, contemporary, and projective outlook using case studies from pre- and ongoing electrification communities in non-Western countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, Malawi, Tanzania, and Nigeria. Beyond the diverse nature of these countries in terms of their geographical location in West, East, and Southern Africa, each offers a different experience in terms of colonial history, economic and institutional infrastructure, social and cultural context, and level of adoption of off-grid solar technologies.  Notably, the book contributes to the off-grid solar and energy justice scholarship in low-income non-Western contexts. It examines various approaches to energy justice and does so by engaging with Western and non-Western philosophical notions of the concept. It takes into consideration the major principles of Ubuntu philosophy with the adoption of off-grid solar technologies, hence enriching the energy justice framework. Finally, the book interrogates the degree to which the social mission that catalysed the expansion of the off-grid solar sector is being undermined by broader structural dynamics of the capital investment upon which it is reliant. It also argues that the ascendance of off-grid solar electrification in Africa is transformative in that it enables millions of people without access to or facing uncertainties linked to centralised grid energy to have access to basic energy services.

This book explores how academic leaders throughout higher education experience and practice care and the ethics of care. Drawing on a narrative inquiry study of experiences and practices of feminist care ethics in higher education leadership, Schultz counters academic norms, including expectations of competition and criticism across all activities, by uncovering the common experiences of academic leaders who intentionally adopt practices guided by an ethics of care and relationality. Within the context of institutions of higher education responding to present-day social movements, the book highlights how practices of care-centered leadership can enable change that begins on campus and reaches outwards to positively impact the community.

Hospital-based physicians are privy to some of the most meaningful moments of people¿s lives, including life-changing diagnoses, pivotal medical procedures, complex medical decisions, and critical end-of-life decisions. Yet, hospitalists have no framework for how to incorporate the varied social factors that impact care such as race, gender identity, cultural background, immigration status, sexual orientation, primary language, housing status, and poverty into clinical decision-making. As hospital physicians, we may use interpreters for our limited English proficiency patients, or try to incorporate questions about cultural practices into our admission histories, or even ask our patients about the ways in which they feel racism has affected their care, but these practices are inconsistently applied and lack a systematic framework for ensuring that the hospital care we provide is truly equitable. In my own practice as a hospital-based physician, I can recall scoresof hospitalized patients where we tried hard to provide equitable care, but fell short. I remember the Spanish-speaking patient with multiple comorbidities who received neurosurgery and was on the road to recovery on an acute care unit, when on day three, he complained of vague abdominal discomfort and ended up dying of a perforated bowel. No interpreter was used by the team to fully delve into the details of the pain he was experiencing. I remember the young Black patient with terminal malignancy who had multiple repeated conversations with physicians recommending hospice care but refused until he saw a physician who was able to explain hospice within the context of racism that has historically defined clinical care for Black people, and was able to present hospice not as a way to hasten death but rather as a way to live the remainder of his days in comfort. I remember the elderly Pakistani female patient whose demanding son antagonized staff and clinicians alike until he was banned from visiting because of his aggressiveness with staff and whose inability to visit his mother caused her extreme distress as she felt that she had lost the unique voice that only her oldest son could provide. Imagine if the hospital physicians in these cases had a resource to help them provide care that is culturally humble, that goes beyond just speaking in the patient¿s first language but that also includes active listening and truly takes into consideration the life experiences and culture that have made this patient who they are. This is what this book will provide for hospital medicine physicians, a framework to help hospital physicians deeply incorporate social factors into the care they provide.
