The aim of this text is to introduce discrete mathematics to beginning students of mathematics or computer science. It does this by bringing some coherency into the seemingly incongruent subjects that compose discrete math, such as logic, set theory, algebra, and combinatorics. It emphasizes their theoretical foundations and illustrates proofs along the way. The book prepares readers for the analysis of algorithms by discussing asymptotic analysis and a discrete calculus for sums. The book also deduces combinatorial methods from the foundations that are laid out. Unlike other texts on this subject, there is a greater emphasis on foundational material that leads to a better understanding. To further assist the reader in grasping and practicing concepts, roughly 690 exercises are provided at various levels of difficulty. Readers are encouraged to study the examples in the text and solve as many of the exercises as possible. The text is intended for freshman or sophomore undergraduate students in mathematics, computer science, or similar majors. The assumed background is precalculus. The chapter dependency chart included is designed to help students, independent readers, and instructors follow a systematic path for learning and teaching the material, with the option to explore material in later chapters.

This book provides a concise yet comprehensive introduction to generative artificial intelligence. The first part explains the foundational technologies and architectures that support the realization of generative models. It covers evolved and deepened elements, word embeddings as a representative example of representation learning, and the Transformer as a network foundation, along with its underlying attention mechanism. Reinforcement learning, which became essential for elevating large-scale language models to language generation models, is also discussed in detail, focusing on essential aspects. The second part deals with language generation. It starts by elucidating language modelsand introduces large-scale language models with broad applications as the foundational architecture of language processing, further discussing language generation models as their evolution. Though not common terminology, in this book, models such as ChatGPT and Llama 2, which are large-scale language models fine-tuned using reinforcement learning, are referred to as generative language models. The third part addresses image generation, discussing variational autoencoders and the remarkable diffusion models. Additionally, it explains Generative Adversarial Networks(GAN). Although GAN poses challenges due to unstable learning, their conceptual framework is widely applicable, especially Wasserstein GAN seems suitable for introducing optimal trans- port distance, which is utilized in various scenarios. This book primarily serves as a companion for researchers or graduate students in machine learning, aiming to help them understand the essence of generative AI and lay the groundwork for advancing their own research.

This book is about the role that social media plays in the lives of individuals, societies, economies and polities. It therefore takes in a wide view of the emergent and changing impacts of social media platforms, and social media practices. As a consequence, it examines social media use through various intellectual and scholarly traditions --psychology, sociology, cultural studies, economics, and (national and global) politics ¿ but it is primarily situated in the field of media and communications studies. As such, it frames its analysis of social media impacts using media studies concepts and terminology, and places media texts, forms, industries and agents (producers, audiences and other users) at the centre of each thematic chapter.
This text lays the foundation for understanding the beauty and power of discrete-time models. It covers rich mathematical modeling landscapes, each offering deep insights into the dynamics of biological systems. A harmonious balance is achieved between theoretical principles, mathematical rigor, and practical applications. Illustrative examples, numerical simulations, and empirical case studies are provided to enhance mastery of the subject and facilitate the translation of discrete-time mathematical biology into real-world challenges. Mainly geared to upper undergraduates, the text may also be used in graduate courses focusing on discrete-time modeling. Chapters 1-4 constitute the core of the text. Instructors will find the dependence chart quite useful when designing their particular course. This invaluable resource begins with an exploration of single-species models where frameworks for discrete-time modeling are established. Competition models and Predator-prey interactions are examined next followed by evolutionary models, structured population models, and models of infectious diseases. The consequences of periodic variations, seasonal changes, and cyclic environmental factors on population dynamics and ecological interactions are investigated within the realm of periodically forced biological models. This indispensable resource is structured to support educational settings: A first course in biomathematics, introducing students to the fundamental mathematical techniques essential for biological research.
