Helping at a small farm can be full of surprises particularly when baby goats are expected! This story is about an unexpected surprise, which was the birth of a goat born with only three legs on a cold fall morning on a little farm in Rhode Island. Nature has its way of throwing curve balls, sometimes with results that teach us about perspective, resilience, acceptance, and love. In this instance a baby goat (Peggy) was originally rejected by its confused mother and a little help was needed. I am a newly retired science teacher who had been looking for a way to continue "reaching" children, and happened to be caring for the animals at the farm when this took place! I often thought about writing children's book, and the universe presented Peggy to me. This little goat was born with all the spunk and determination a newborn farm animal can possess which is a lesson in how attitude affects everything. Animals can be great equalizers and can model for us approaches to life which can help us navigate difficult situations. It is my hope that this story can provide some hope and a little courage to children who may be dealing with some form of struggle due to a disability, as well as a message to others to always remain kind and open-minded.

Pair bonding, or long-term adult romantic relationship, was advantageous in ensuring offspring survival and adult protection in the evolutionary environment, thus humans have evolved with strong mating and pair bonding motivations (Belsky, 1999; Fraley, Brumbaugh & Marks, 2005; Fraley & Shaver, 2000). Because successes and failures in meeting adaptive goals is correlated with emotional and psychological health (Nesse, 2016; Plutchik, 2003), decreased or thwarted mating opportunity should theoretically impact wellbeing. Sex ratio refers to the number of males relative to females in a given population and significantly influences mating opportunity. When sex ratio is skewed, the oversupplied sex experiences a dearth in mating opportunity (Guttengang & Secord, 1983). The minimal research that has been conducted in this area suggests that population sex ratio and mating opportunity influence wellbeing (Tucker & Mitchel-Kernan, 1989) yet more research is necessary to gain a better understanding of the psychological impact of sex ratio.
