My Remberance of the War, etc. 1861-1865 by George Campbell Maguire (1847-1908) In approximately 1893 George Campbell Maguire inscribed the final version of his memoir in a small booklet with “Diary” imprinted on the cover. He told of events both large and small that he witnessed as a young boy. Almost all of his memoir are stories of what he himself saw, with a few tales told by others. He saw the results of the Pratt Street Riots in Baltimore and the USS Congress and the USS Cumberland after the attack by the Merrimac. He tells of the crab-eaten dead and the stinking wounded, and he found himself in the Battle of Antietam. Later, Clara Barton asks, “whose boy I was”. In his teens he became a customs man at Harper’s Ferry and later in the war he worked at the Hicks Hospital for war wounded and diseased in Baltimore. Many of the brief stories are wry anecdotes of his misadventures and those of others, recounted with humor and affection. His writing is spare and unadorned, yet a certain pain seems slightly below the surface of some of the darker events recalled and described. The reader inevitably reflects upon the dual and simultaneous perspective of the boy and the man, decades later, who certaintly forgot more than he has told us.

This book of poems reflects twenty-five years as an educator, of the people, places, and, most of all, the students that so changed my life. As my life unfolded around my students, I began to write poetry to ease my feeling of helplessness with each lost student. I could also join in with the many little successes of my students as they continued the journey of living and learning.I captured my feelings as I listened to the words as they fell from my pen and hoped that in some small way I have touched another soul.

Vinny is a kid just like you, or is he? Vinny is from a family of metalheads and like his parents, he’s one too. As a child Vinny was unaware of his family’s differences, but as he got older, Vinny noticed that he was, in fact, not like other children. As the years passed, the more Vinny realized that being different is not easy. He noticed people staring, whispering to themselves as he passed, and sometimes shouting insults. Because of the differences, Vinny had a hard time making friends in elementary school. However, the lack of friends did not get him down, and as he entered middle school, Vinny was determined to find friends who were metal like him. Join Vinny as he shares his story of bullying, difference, coping, and perseverance.

Now this may appear to be a complete science-fiction story on the outside, but it has a deeper meaning inside. This is the story of how the last known survivors of four sets of young sibling beings from a doomed planet were separated by fowl means by the evil antics of a manacle intergalactic warlord and his messed up and backstabbing crew as one set of four ended up on Earth and the other set of four were left to find their lost surviving siblings out somewhere in the vast reaches of space. In a two-thousand-year span, the two groups grew from acquaintances to a family as they learned that a family was stronger than an individual or just a team. The story goes from their past to the present as they figure out on how to survive in their new settings till the two families reunite after two thousand years apart as they join forces to protect earth and the universe from the same evil that has destroyed their home world. You will see just why these beings are considered "the most dangerous beings in the universe," and it's not the fact that they are evil, which they are not; it's because evil knows that these are not the ones you want to mess with! And you will see that there is a society out in the stars that might appear to be of a far, far, far away intergalactic kingdom, but it's nowhere near intelligent as Star Trek and nowhere near mystifying as Star Wars. And above that, you will learn what a Heart is, and it has nothing to do with expressing your love for someone or the main artery inside you; it's an institution that works to protect others from any and all forms of evil.
